REGULAR
The sustainability baton
We get an update on the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) from Neil Spencer- Cook, Chief Operating Officer.
2023 is well underway and one of the key topics now is sustainability. BICSc has been concerned about this over the past few years and has made some inroads towards it. As we continue to review our processes, this year we’re announcing a couple of changes that will address this even more.
Until September 2020, becoming a BICSc assessor meant you needed a hefty folder to
complete your assessments. The BICSc kit, as it’s called, is the essential guide for all assessors, however in 2020 we released the BICSc CPSS App.
The app, available for both Apple and Android handheld devices, offered a virtual replacement for the kit containing all the resources from the hard copy, and gave the assessor the opportunity to submit skill assessments directly to BICSc for processing without having to complete any paperwork. Up until the end of December 2022, more than 19,000 assessments have been submitted through the App.
We are now taking this to the next stage, and from June 2023 the hard copy kit will no longer be available, and all Accredited Training Members and their assessors will only be able to use the BICSc CPSS App. From January 2024 we will no longer accept any assessment submission unless it’s through the app.
In addition, we will also be looking at how we carry out the annual audits for all our training centres and our associated carbon footprint for travel. Over the course of the next two years, we will group together, by region, all the centres and travel to one area for a period to complete these audits. We would ask you all to be flexible with the team whilst we tweak the audit dates and we will be as flexible as we can, but we do request that our centres please do the same.

We’re conscious of how hard times are now and haven’t increased our prices for several years. We’re not making any increase this year either, however if you’re unable to fit in with the other centres in your area timewise then we may need to consider making an additional charge for travel costs. We are offering remote audits in alternate years; these will be completed by video call in addition to all of the above.
We are hoping our centres will work with us on this and it will mean a clearer way forward with your assessments and audits.
The Virtual Training Suite is one of the areas that has helped BICSc to improve its sustainability. We have completed over 33,000 courses in 20 months virtually and all handouts are electronic. All courses have been completed by only using chemicals once and not multiple times, meaning less plastic, less laundry and much less travel than doing this face-to-face. The aim is to increase this further to continue the trend. We will not stop offering face-to-face training as this is something that we know some of you prefer, but any reduction in our impact on the planet and sustainability is a plus for us at BICSc.
What more can we do? Well, we are wherever possible using public transport, and not everyone is in the office every day: the new model of hybrid working reduces travel requirements.
However, we are still business as usual: you will still receive the same level of service, you will still receive access to our experts and you can still access the free online courses available, even if you aren’t a member.
The need for sustainability will not go away, so we will continue the trend and look at ways to reduce the impact BICSc has on the planet's future.
