2500 shots of soap – more than twice the amount of an average liquid soap dispenser. This ensures that the unit will not run out of soap when a hand wash is urgently needed.

The Tork PeakServe Continuous Hand Towel system also works well in the healthcare sector because the dispenser gives out a towel in just three seconds, which helps to speed up hand drying. The unit holds up to 2100 towels at a time, which also means it is highly unlikely to run out during hectic shifts.

While providing user-friendly products is important, it’s even more crucial that healthcare workers are given the skills and knowhow they need to use those products correctly. In a recent survey of 1000 healthcare professionals commissioned by Tork, it emerged that 40% of them were keen to receive enhanced hand hygiene training.

We at Essity now offer an app designed to help instil good hand hygiene habits into healthcare staff and to clarify those situations in which hand washing is vital. The Tork VR Clean Hands Training and Education app is free to download and uses virtual reality to provide realistic scenarios where hand washing needs to be carried out.

The current crisis is not only tough for medical workers, it’s also highly stressful for hospital cleaners who play a vital role in ensuring that every frequently-touched surface is clean and sanitised. This can be daunting for low-paid workers who may have been given hurried instructions in English – which might not even be their first language.

A recent study conducted at Clemson University in South Carolina revealed that many cleaners were struggling to keep up with the enhanced cleaning and disinfectant measures required due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Respondents complained of a lack of ongoing training and a feeling of being undervalued. The study, published in the American Journal of Infection, concluded that enhanced

training in cleaning and disinfection practices could help to overcome these issues.

Essity has just launched a training package to clarify the key steps a cleaner should take when cleaning an occupied ward and when carrying out discharge cleaning.

Tork Interactive Clean Hospital Training takes staff through various real-world scenarios, methodically detailing each step of the process from picking up debris to emptying the bins, wiping down refuse containers and carrying out all other ward-cleaning tasks. The module is available in more than 15 languages including Spanish, Arabic and Somali.

Providing healthcare cleaners with the right tools for the task is also important because this will help them to do their jobs more effectively. Essity has just launched two new microfibre cloths to help them in their role. Tork Microfibre Reusable Cleaning Cloth and Tork Microfibre Disposable Cleaning Cloths will both wipe away 99.9% of microorganisms from surfaces, including COVID-19 and harder-to-remove pathogens such as C.difficile.

At Essity we have helped to support medical teams in other ways during the pandemic. Early on in 2020 we switched one of our tissue production lines over to face masks, producing more than 100,000 for distribution to the healthcare sector. We also donated 51,600 items of personal protective equipment including masks, gloves and protective glasses to hospitals in Italy during the first wave of COVID-19.

Carers do an amazing job, but in order to do so they need the care and support of others. At Essity we are proud to be able to help them by providing support, appreciation, training – plus the essential products they need to make their lives that little bit easier.
