Reducing waste, raising standards

Here we learn more from Cleanology about their sustainable aims and objectives.

Pioneering UK cleaning firm Cleanology’s mission is to be a truly sustainable business, leading by example and setting new standards for the industry. Based in London and Manchester, Cleanology is committed to reducing waste – particularly plastic waste – across its business activities.

CEO Dominic Ponniah said: “We achieved a European first with our portion-controlled biological cleaning sachets, which save 16,092L of cleaning solution and cut plastic bottle use from 21,600 to 600 every year.”

An estimated 14m single-use plastic bottles are used and discarded by the UK cleaning industry every year, usually ending up in landfill or in the ocean. As well as keeping waste out of landfill, the use of portion-controlled sachets reduces transport fuel usage and cuts down the use of fossil fuels to manufacture plastic bottles.

Waste and overuse of harmful cleaning chemicals is an enduring problem in the cleaning industry. An extra cupful of solution every few days might seem reasonable but, if that’s multiplied over a year and across the 450,000 people who work in the UK cleaning industry, the impact becomes significant. Multiplied across the globe, the consequences become catastrophic.

Dominic continued: “Cleanology has advocated chemical- free cleaning for over 10 years and is now almost chemical- free across its entire portfolio. The impact of portion control is hugely significant – imagine the global impact of a 99.4% chemical usage reduction.”

Saving plastic bottles from landfill

Workwear uniforms are essential for employee safety, with an estimated 2m uniforms issued to UK cleaning industry staff each year. Almost all are thrown away after use, although Cleanology re-uses all second hand uniforms for training and deep cleaning jobs.

Dominic commented: “In another UK industry first, our cleaning operatives now wear uniforms made from a total of 7000 recycled plastic bottles and organic cotton. Combined with the savings from using portion-controlled sachets, we save 28,000 plastic bottles from landfill every year.

“We are currently taking another step on our constant journey to improve sustainability, with the introduction of a revolutionary new and innovative sustainable cleaning cloth made from recycled plastic bottles, saving even more plastic from landfill.”

36 | SUSTAINABILITY

Realistic goals, setting

an example Cleanology aspires to be a truly sustainable business, innovating and considering the whole lifecycle of every product, material or fuel it uses, while ensuring that employees follow its environmental practices and policies.

Dominic continued: “We are registered for ISO 14001, and monitoring and measuring activities has provided a useful tool to demonstrate whether we are setting realistic goals, meeting them, and planning ahead in the right areas.”

To reduce emissions, Cleanology’s London fleet is now 100% electric, and a focus on reducing paper use has resulted in a dramatic fall of 33,000 sheets of paper each year, by switching to e-invoices for clients, and e-payslips for staff.

On-site effectiveness often depends on staff buy-in, so Cleanology inspires its staff to improve on their environmental performance. Contracted and sub- contracted staff receive in-depth training during their induction, undertake refresher courses throughout their Cleanology careers, and are regularly surveyed to assess the level of environmental awareness.

Dominic concluded: “Seeking sustainable solutions, from recycled uniforms to electric vehicles, produces immediate and visible gains which not only benefit the planet but also reassure our customers. Monitoring and reviewing the use of paper, fuel and energy is simply best practice, as is ensuring that all staff and clients fully understand our sustainability strategy and goals.

“In these ways, all of Cleanology’s achievements could be replicated anywhere in the world where more responsible cleaning is a priority.”
