Flying high Sustainability at East Midlands Airport is soaring thanks to some help from HSG.


East Midlands Airport (EMA) has further improved its environmental credentials by adopting an innovative water conservation system at the Castle Donington passenger terminal.


EMA is the latest company to team up with Derby-based washroom water conservation specialists HSG and install the Ureco system which reduces water consumption, saves money on utility bills and improves the washroom experience for passengers departing and arriving at the airport. HSG’s technical team took advantage of lockdown to install the system across the site.


This will reduce EMA’s water consumption by 16,845,480 litres over the next three years, reduce production of CO2 by 5.907 tonnes a year, and save the company more than £14,000 in water bills annually.


Recognised by The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation, HSG’s Ureco system stops smells by trapping urinal odours below the surface and reduces blockages through the patented enzyme system which breaks down the fat, acid and salt in urine.


This enables the Uretech water manager to reduce urinal flushes from around 96 times to just four times a day – drastically reducing water usage, saving money on utility bills, maintenance, repairs, and improving the customers’ washroom experience.


Further innovations from HSG include the Uretech Plus professional water management solution. Fitted onto a venue’s existing water meter, Uretech Plus uses the latest Wi-Fi technology to provide minute-by-minute readings of water usage to a laptop, tablet or smartphone. A particular benefit is that it alerts to unusual water usage – for example, a leaking tap – to help avoid disastrous flood damage.


Saeid Nikjooy, EMA’s Head of Asset Maintenance Services, explained: “We trialled the Ureco system over an eight-week period. The results were outstanding, both in terms of the washroom hygiene and the reduced water usage, and we have rolled out the system across the site with 68 Ureco units and 26 Uretech water managers.

“Sustainability is embedded into all our operations and we aim to lead the way among airports in addressing our social and environmental responsibilities and achieving significant cost savings.


“Furthermore, as travel restrictions are eased and passenger numbers increase, improved washroom facilities will be vitally important for our customers in the terminal building.”


HSG Managing Director, Simon Rice, concluded: “Lockdown has enabled us to install the Ureco system in washrooms across East Midlands Airport – maintaining safe social distance for our technical team.

East Midlands Airport, part of MAG (the group that own Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports), was the first of any UK airport to make a commitment to achieve carbon neutral ground operations by 2012 – relating to buildings, ground support vehicles and service partner emissions.


In 2011/12, carbon emissions at the airport were reduced by a further 3578 tonnes through energy reduction and the introduction of renewable energy such as the installation of two commercial scale wind turbines and the planting of a 26-hectare willow farm on site.
