10 QUESTIONS WITH... CERIS BURNS

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Ceris Burns, Managing Director of Ceris Burns International.

Q4

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,

WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? New Zealand is still on my bucket list – beautiful open countryside and a climate that even my fair skin can cope with. Or Argentina, for the ultimate polo playing experience.

Q5 Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

I started my first job as International Marketing Executive for Albyn Medical in 1992, a pioneer in innovative medical devices. It was a great job in a fantastic little company where they threw me right in at the deep end.

Q2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

Like many of us, by chance, back in 2003. I had been based out in Italy for six years doing international marketing across a range of industries from welding and cutting to automotive, security and fashion – yes, my work has always been very glam. I returned to the UK and landed a job with Kennedy Hygiene Products as International Marketing Manager.

After four years I bit the bullet and set up my own business: specialist international PR agency Ceris Burns International. The business has grown significantly over the last ten years and we specialise in PR for cleaning and FM, recycling and waste management, and construction industries – and we recently launched an equestrian division.

Q3

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR

PERSONALITY? Professional, straight-talking, determined.

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I’d have to say that ongoing communications is vital. You may have the greatest idea, products or services but you need to make sure people know about them and what makes them special.

Q6

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Take your time to learn the tools of the trade. If you cut corners and miss out on the early groundwork, this will hold you back later on in your career. Don’t think you know it all on day one and take time to learn from more experienced colleagues. Once you know your stuff, jump right in and don’t be afraid to aim high.

Q7

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD

YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I was taught to be a grafter and to never wait to have it handed to me: I never do

the lottery as I’ve always enjoyed trying to create my own fortune. That said, a no expenses spared family holiday treat would be very nice – and another horse of course.

Q8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE

ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Elvis when he was in his prime because he sounded and looked great, my partner as cocktail maker, and mum and dad – can’t have one without the other – to whip up a great meal and get the conversation going.

Q9

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE

CLEANING INDUSTRY? Partnerships with other sectors are more crucial as we see greater crossover with different industries such as cleaning and recycling. Technology also has a bigger role to play across every industry. International business has become commonplace and this will continue with markets such as India raising the bar in its cleaning and hygiene standards.

John Brill, Sales Director at Nilfisk, asks: Q10

WATER IS CENTRAL TO THE CLEANING PROCESS,

HOW CONCERNED ARE YOU THAT WATER WILL BECOME A SCARCE RESOURCE AND INCREASINGLY EXPENSIVE? WHAT ACTION CAN THE INDUSTRY TAKE NOW TO COUNTERACT THIS? I’m very concerned about protecting valuable resources including water. Every business and individual needs to use resources such as water more wisely by reducing usage, re-using where possible and introducing more water-efficient appliances.
