10 QUESTIONS WITH…

Each month, we ask a flooring industry professional 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to John Holmes, Managing Director, Reprotec UK Ltd

Q1 Q2

Q3

What was your first job? I always knew I was heading for a business career

since I was at school but my first job was as an apprentice toolmaker at the age of 16 years.

How did you get into the industry? I started selling resin repair-compounds and

building maintenance products within my engineering business. However, it soon became apparent that companies were looking for people to provide the full package so we started our contracting services and continued to sell our material products to trade and public.

What do you think are the positives and negatives of the flooring trade?

Resin floors are developing all the time, we now use more eco-friendly products, and the resin floor industry has become a trade and profession, with its own national association, FeRFA.

The only one negative of working in the resin floor trade is the unsociable hours – we often have to work during business downtime while others aren’t at work.

Q7 Q4

If you could hire any one person to be part of your team, who would it be

and why?

Someone who has ideas, and the same values, drive and enthusiasm to lead the company forward and who fits in with the team.

Q5 Q6

What’s the best advice you could give to someone new coming into the industry?

Be strong with your systems of work and procedures for getting paid.

If you could invent any product what would it be and why?

A machine to replace a hand grinder. This would make the preparation work a lot easier and quicker.

Q8 Q9

If you could have a dinner party with any three people, dead or alive, who would

they be and why?

My dad and two grandads who are sadly no longer with us. They were great, hardworking guys - down-to-earth, honest and great craic. They were all a massive influence and driving force behind my success with the business.

What do you think the future holds for flooring design?

I think we will see more sustainability with increasingly user- friendly products to minimise the affect on the environment and the customer’s productivity.

What would you like to see in a future issue of Tomorrow’s Contract Floors?

I’d like to see more focus on resins. Q10

Gavin Whiley, MD, Havwoods Accessories Ltd asked: If you could

have a superpower what would it be? I’d love to be invisible for the day.
