F.Ball and Co. Ltd are ’breaking boundaries’ in an outdoor installation at a Southampton Cricket Club.
A range of high-performance floor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. proved to be the perfect solution for contractors refurbishing an outdoor batting area at Paultons Cricket Club in Ower, Southampton. Stopgap P131 primer, Stopgap 850 Exterior floor smoothing compound, and Styccobond F74 adhesive were all used to create a perfect, durable, and lasting artificial grass finish for the club’s outdoor practice nets area.
The refurbishment required the creation of an ultra smooth and durable surface over the entire 300m2
area occupied
by the practice nets, with the artificial grass covering installed securely on top to complete the installation.
External installations, such as this, require purpose-designed floor preparation products and adhesives to ensure the finished floor surface is able to withstand the variety of weather conditions they will be subjected to over the years.
To begin the refurbishment, contractors from Universal Flooring Ltd., based in Fareham, cleaned and primed the surface with Stopgap P131 general purpose primer, ready to receive a 5mm application of Stopgap 850 Exterior floor smoothing compound. The worn subfloor required the specially formulated smoothing compound, to produce a sound and level surface on which to practise batting and bowling skills. The product’s self-levelling properties mean only minimal work with a smoothing trowel is required to achieve a perfect finish. Once set and dried, Stopgap 850 Exterior provides and super smooth and durable surface finish, that is unaffected by rain or frost.
Priming the subfloor beforehand promotes improved adhesion between the smoothing compound and the subfloor and also prevents unacceptably rapid drying of the compound, which can lead to pinholing and compromise its performance.

adhesive to secure the new artificial grass covering over the 300m2
area.
Styccobond F74’s 25 minute open time gave contractors ample time to trowel- apply the adhesive and carefully put the floorcoverings in place, ensuring a seamless, perfectly flat finish. Styccobond F74 is a one-part, moisture curing polyurethane adhesive. It is resistant to grease, oil, and surface water, making it ideal for outdoor flooring installations.
Commenting on the installation, Terry O’Brien, Project Manager for Universal Flooring Ltd, said: “We regularly use F. Ball products for our indoor installations, but using Stopgap 850 Exterior was a first. The guys were all very impressed with the products, particularly the smoothing compound, as it was just so simple and easy to use. The high-quality result was exactly the finish we needed.”
