10 Questions with... Alasdair Sharp

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Alasdair Sharp, UK & Ireland Sales Manager at Satino by WEPA.

1 2

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Washing pots in a restaurant.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? I started out in cleaning in 2014, as a key account

manager for a leading provider of hygiene and paper products. It taught me a lot about channel distribution as well as identifying opportunities for business development and growing your customer base.

3 4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Relaxed, jovial and determined.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? Aruba. I’m a big fan of sun, sea and beaches.

5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I would replace hand dryers with paper hand towels, UK-wide. Research has shown that paper towels are more effective in preventing the spread of germs – something which has never been more relevant.

6

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

Get to know the cleaning industry inside and out. It’s also crucial that you have a good understanding of your customer’s pain points, so that you can provide them with a tailored solution to meet their needs.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

I’d move to somewhere a lot warmer than the UK, and maybe even purchase a racehorse or two.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY

BE AND WHY? Former rugby union player Jonny Wilkinson (he was my idol growing up), Tony McCoy (unbelievable sportsman and winning mentality) and finally Sacha Baron Cohen – purely for the entertainment value.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I think that the profile and importance of the cleaning and hygiene sector – certainly in the UK – will increase. Hopefully, we will also see greater investment into innovation and product development across the industry, allowing us to live in a more hygienic and safer world.

James White, Managing Director at Denis Rawlins Ltd, asks: 10

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT REGULATIONS WE COULD PUT IN PLACE

WHEN TURNING THE CLEANING INDUSTRY INTO A PROFESSION? Enhanced entry requirements for the industry such as certification and licencing. We would also benefit from improved regulations around cleaning practices, as well as increased investment in employee education and development to improve standards.
