10 QUESTIONS WITH… Q8

Each month, we ask a flooring industry professional 10 Questions.

What was your first job? I worked for a landscaping

What do you think the future holds for

How did you get into the industry?

I entered the flooring industry through my family connections. My father founded the business in 1983 and it seemed a natural fit for me to follow in his footsteps. As part of the next generation, I was able to bring new direction and commitment to the team, which contributed to our rapid growth.

What do you think are the positives and

negatives of the flooring trade? I think the positives of the flooring trade are the people within it. It’s a close community with a fantastic knowledge and relationship base. The links that we enjoy with both our customers and suppliers make it an enjoyable industry to be a part of.

I think the negative side to the trade is the reluctance to try new or innovative products. It’s breaking the ‘we’ve always done it this way’ mind-set that can be really tricky and a barrier to greater things.

Q4

If you could hire any one person to be part

of your team, who would it be

and why? I truly believe that our team today has by far the most potential it has ever had. The only change I would make would be to invest more in training to develop our team’s skill set further. Our people are our biggest asset.

Q5

What’s the best advice you could

give to someone new

coming into the industry? The flooring industry is so wide ranging that it’s difficult to give any specific advice. As we often say - always be

flooring design? Considering the scale of the flooring market in terms of the amount of areas to cover, the lifespans of floorcoverings and the ever changing trends in the world, I fully believe that the future will always be bright for the industry.

Due to the fact that we live in an age now where technologies and products are evolving at a rapid rate, I think we are on the cusp of great things. I predict plenty of new products, all easily accessible to clients, who will be looking for instant information and better experiences. On the back of this, I’m hoping for a better informed and prepared industry.

Q9

What would you like to see in a future issue of

Tomorrow’s Contract Floors? I would like to see some features with key figures from the industry’s target market, so we could see ourselves through their eyes. I’d like to know what they think makes a great product or supplier, and find out some of their needs and wants. I also always enjoy seeing how they have used our products, and receiving feedback.

prepared for change, because when you have finished changing, you are finished. Also, it’s good to respect the knowledge of those that have been in the industry for longer than you.

Q6

If you could invent any product what would it

be and why? As a keen traveller, ideally I’d like to see the return and improvement of supersonic travel to cut down on the hours I spend on a plane.

Q7

If you could have a dinner party with any

three people, dead or alive,

who would they be and why? I come from a close knit family with strong values so I’d spend the time with them and enjoy their company.

Q10

James Fisher, Managing Director,

Howe Green Ltd asked: Do you see BIM featuring heavily in

current projects? We are definitely noticing BIM a lot more on current projects. As more professionals start to see the advantages of it and use it, I believe that BIM will have a big part to play in the future.

I read recently that data is the new oil, and with data comes knowledge. BIM is fantastic in the way it uses dynamic real time data to empower and influence decision making, therefore its benefits cannot be overlooked.
