REMEDY FOR SUCCESS F. Ball products have proven the ideal solution for a Kent cancer centre project.
A range of high performance subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Co Ltd. have been used as part of a major development to create a satellite Cancer Centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. The new centre means that most patients will no longer have to travel into central London for treatment as Guy’s and St Thomas’ staff will provide it there.
The new 1,700m2 state-of-the-art facility is expected to
provide 16,000 radiotherapy and 4,600 chemotherapy treatments a year. With such a volume of footfall, it was essential that the hospital had a high-quality floor that is able to withstand heavy usage and vigorous cleaning while also having an aesthetically pleasing finish.
“Before we started the floor installation F. Ball’s technical team
carried out a survey of the area and recommended the products for us to use and we followed that advice.”
A moisture test undertaken on the recently installed sand: cement screed subfloor, using a Protimeter MMS2, found readings of 999, well above the “at risk” reading of 200, indicating excessive levels of residual construction moisture in the subfloor. A hygrometer reading was then taken on the advice of
F.Ball’s technical representative to accurately measure the relative humidity of the subfloor.
Due to the timing implications of the project there was insufficient time to allow the subfloor to dry naturally, so, after sanding down the floor to create a smooth surface and
removing all laitance and contaminants, flooring contractors Mode Flooring Ltd, acting on advice from F. Ball’s technical service team, applied two coats of Stopgap F78 One Component Waterproof Surface Membrane.
Stopgap F78 solvent-free waterproof surface membrane is a rapid drying product that impedes the passage of residual construction moisture from affecting subsequent floorcovering installations and is used to isolate moisture where relative humidity values are up to 95%, making it ideal for this project.
Once the waterproof surface membrane was dry, contractors used
F.Ball’s Stopgap Green Bag mixed with Stopgap 114 Liquid to create a low-odour, protein-free, smoothing underlayment to achieve a smooth and level surface ready for the application of F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 high bond strength adhesive to secure the vinyl floorcovering to the surface.
With its strong initial tack and long open time, F44 was ideal for ensuring the floorcovering was securely adhered to the highest standard, and would also be able to withstand heavy foot traffic and vigorous cleaning.
Mode Flooring Ltd director Andrew Searle said: “I use F. Ball products a lot on a day-to-day basis so I know the products will be reliable and the company’s technical service team and brochures can always be relied upon to recommend the right products for each job.
