During the first week, apprentices were introduced to subfloor identification, moisture management and smoothing compounds, before moving on to timber substrates and plywood installation.
“For some, it was the first time they’d ever worked with plywood or smooothing compounds,” says Tim. “Others, like Josh, came in with experience, but it’s great to see everyone learning new techniques and understanding the ‘why’ behind each process.”
MEET THE APPRENTICES
BEN HARRIS, 20, T&S CARPET & FLOORING, BURTON
After starting his career as a bricklayer, Ben decided to switch trades in search of a more consistent career. “There are too many off days in bricklaying,” he explains. “Flooring isn’t something you hear much about in school, but I’m really enjoying it. The training set-up here is excellent – we’ve got all the tools, PPE and support we need.”
He’s already learning new skills, from screeding to cutting carpet tiles. “I love the variety – I get to travel to different places and work on both domestic and commercial jobs,” Ben says.
RHYS PARFITT, 18, F. BALL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE, STAFFORDSHIRE
Rhys joined the programme after deciding that a classroom-based course in sports training wasn’t for him. “I wanted something practical,” he says. “Learning how to fit carpet and tiles has been great. Masking around skirting boards and cutting plywood were a challenge, but I’m getting there.”
He’s now looking forward to
putting his skills into practice. “In a couple of weeks, I’ll be fitting carpet tiles in office spaces here at F. Ball and then going out with contractors. Eventually, I’ll get to deliver training sessions myself – I can’t wait.”
JOSH PIERSON, 20, MIDAS FLOORS, BIRMINGHAM
With two years’ experience already under his belt, Josh joined Floorsight to refine his skills. “Most layers are self- taught,” he says. “I wanted to learn the right way. My company uses lots of F. Ball products, so this was a great opportunity.”
He enjoys the mix of hands- on learning and technical understanding. “It’s great to

learn why we do things a certain way,” says Josh. "I've picked up new techniques, like working with smoothing compounds, which I hadn’t done before.”
A SHARED INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE
For F. Ball, Floorsight represents a long-term investment in skills, quality and professionalism within the flooring industry.
“It’s important to upskill people, but it needs to be done right,” says Tim Green. “We always teach best practice – that’s how you get the best out of premium products and ensure the industry continues to thrive.”
With Floorsight, F. Ball and its partners are doing more than launching a training scheme – they’re building the foundation for a stronger, more sustainable future for the flooring industry.
