LEVEL A Getting the subfloor right is critical to achieving a suc

Whether a floor is to be finished with tiles, resilient flooring, carpet or any other covering, achieving a level subfloor is critical to a successful outcome. Any newly-laid or existing substrate is likely to need levelling with the use of a self-levelling compound to ensure there is the lowest possible height variance in the floor. The leveller acts as an intermediate layer, on to which the finished floorcovering can be laid.

Concrete must be at least six weeks old before floorcoverings are laid. This drying period allows movement caused by drying shrinkage to take place. It should be clean, dry and free from dust or contaminants which may act as a release agent and prevent the adhesive from bonding to the concrete.

Preparation requirements differ depending upon the substrate. Cement/sand screeds, anhydrite screeds, chipboard or existing tiled surfaces all require different priming/ sealing regimes before they are suitable for levelling.

When levelling impervious substrates such as existing tile finishes, Norcros Key Bond Gritted Primer should first be applied. This is a ready-to-use, low emission, film-forming, fast- drying modified styrene acrylic copolymer dispersion primer which is designed for use directly on to dense, non-absorbent smooth surfaces and epoxy and PU-based primers. Once dry, the primer provides a rough textured key on to which levelling compounds and adhesives can form a strong bond.

Norcros Adhesives also offers one of the widest ranges of levellers available on the market.

Norcros Pro 30 Fast Track Eco Levelling Compound is the newest addition to the range and contains recycled crushed glass which replaces quarried sand. It is suitable for a large number of different substrates.

Norcros Pro 30 Fast Track Eco can be used for encapsulating under-tile heating mats and cables, protecting the heating elements during the tile-fixing process as well as providing a level surface for tiling. It is suitable for use on timber floors which have been overlaid with 15-18mm WBP or marine-grade plywood. It can be used up to 30mm thick in one application without having to be bulked out by granite chippings.

Other products in the levellers range include: Norcros Pro 50 Levelling Compound, a single part, fibre-reinforced self- smoothing floor underlayment which can be used up to 50mm thick in one application without the need for additional granite chippings; Norcros Pro 10 Levelling Compound, a single part polymer modified self-smoothing floor levelling compound; Norcros 2-Part Levelling Compound, which can be used from feather edge to 10mm in one application without the need for additional granite chippings; Norcros Pro 10+ Levelling Compound, a pumpable polymer-modified cementitious single part floor leveller, which can be used up to 10mm in one application.

Norcros Adhesives has demonstrated that its products are able to meet the most demanding goals, which is why the company now has an exclusive arrangement with Barratt Homes on its entire range of tile adhesives.

48 | SUBFLOOR PREPARATION

This agreement followed successful trials using Norcros Pro-Gyp Base Fast Track Sealer on the prestigious Sugar Quay development in London. Norcros Pro-Gyp Base Fast Track Sealer allows fast track fixing to anhydrite screeds. The product is a system solution which enables tiling to be carried out on to anhydrite screeds at a much higher humidity level (95%) than the standard requirement of 75% RH.

Anhydrite screeds, also referred to as calcium sulphate or gypsum-based screeds, are now increasingly popular for larger flooring installations. Their use has grown dramatically in the building industry over the last few years because they offer a number of benefits over sand/cement screeds.
