A PIECE OF MANCHESTER’S HISTORY

The Solid Wood Flooring Company was tasked with manufacturing a chevron parquet floor that would be in keeping with an iconic Manchester building.

The Place ApartHotel Central Manchester houses 107 apartments that provide 4-star luxury accommodation in the heart of the city centre. The building was awarded Grade II listed status by English Heritage in 1998 as an acknowledgment of its important cultural and architectural legacy.

This former railway warehouse was built in 1867 during the peak of Manchester’s prominence as the world’s number- one centre for the cloth trade. It is the only one remaining of four warehouses erected by the Manchester & Birmingham Railway Company and was known as the London Warehouse.

In 1998, the building was transformed into the Place ApartHotel, retaining many of the building’s original features, including the impressively crafted iron, stone and brick work. These can be seen in the original Victorian railings manning the balconies, the barrel ceilings, the stupendous façade and the large, spacious public area which makes the Place unique.

When the Place ApartHotel was in need of renovation, main contractors Cost Consultants approached The Solid Wood Flooring Company to manufacture

a chevron board that would fit in with the history of the building and meet the budgetary requirements of their client.

The Solid Wood Flooring Company then met with Archer Humphryes Architects to ascertain exactly what was required and then made samples. Three variations of parquet were produced and the client sent signed control samples back to confirm their choice.

Fumed Antique Chevron Parquet with a Band Sawn-Finish was selected to provide an aged and elegant touch. The oak boards are fumed for two days to give a very large colour variation without any toning from coloured oils. The surface is then band-sawn to create a fantastic texture before being finished with a very matt UV Oil. This creates extreme colour variation and provides a truly unique floor. The Solid Wood Flooring Company then produced high skirting boards 240mm x 18mm thick in the same finish.

The end result was a durable and stylish floor that perfectly matches the Place ApartHotel’s cast iron columns, iron girders and tastefully retained Romanesque window arches.
