FLOOR SEALS & FINISHES

These are tested in the laboratory with standardised methods, but we also understand ‘real life’ situations can dramatically differ from a standard. Spilt drinks, muddy wellies and excited puppies, can all take their toll, which is why we’ve also written unique procedures which target ‘real life’ problems and put Armourflex Hardwax Oil to the test.

The industry accepted method for measuring the scratch resistance of a coating is Pencil Hardness. As obscure as this sounds, it relies on using different grades of artist’s pencils to find which one makes the coating crack. A less archaic method uses a spring-loaded needle to apply a precise amount of pressure, but this is still difficult to relate to the real world. Stain resistance covers a wide range of culprits, including food, drink and cleaning products. Laboratory stain testing involves neat rows of different substances and a stopwatch. After a set time period, they are wiped away to evaluate the damage. To measure abrasion, we utilise a Taber Abraser – a contraption equipped with sandpaper wheels which rubs determinedly at a sample, to see how easily it will wear. This again is the industry standard, but how does it relate to real footfall through a corridor or school hall?

Hardwax shouldn’t mean hard settlement – you shouldn’t be wasting your time mixing stubborn sediment back into the tin, and the sheen needs to be even from the first floorboard until the last.

Testing also doesn’t end at performance. We carried out extensive confirmation of the product stability to engineer a stable shelf life, convenient drying time and avoid skinning or hard settlement of wax and matting agent. Armourflex Hardwax Oil was benchmarked against other air-curing coatings on the market, and we ensured that we met or exceeded them. At the point of manufacture, we fine-tuned Quality Control procedures to confirm that all tins meet our consistent high-quality standards before they leave our factory gates.

Our eager volunteers tested Armourflex Hardwax Oil with wagging tails. https://www.barrettinepro.co.uk/25/1347/armourflex-hardwax-oil

We knew we needed to test Armourflex Hardwax Oil in the real world. Wooden worktops were subjected to everyday wear and tear, facing spills and coffee stains. Three canine members were also drafted in for vigorous scratch testing. We can comfortably say that the cleanability of Armourflex Hardwax Oil is high, and any marks are easily wiped away with a mild floor cleaner. As for the scratch testing, 3m² panels of oak were prepped and coated, then laid at the back door to the Managing Director’s garden. These were subjected to a month of enthusiastic muddy paws and claws from the canine team, then wiped down and evaluated. The evidence – and the coating, is clear – Armourflex Hardwax Oil is up to scratch.

The development process is a team effort, a feedback loop of improvements and suggestions from the team and trade volunteers. We have a wealth of knowledge to share about Armourflex Hardwax Oil and complementary products within the range. With all of the many development steps, Armourflex Hardwax Oil is the culmination of over 300 samples and over 1000 tests. From the first paint out in the laboratory to first tin off the filling line, it was almost four years in the making, and we’re proud to see the finished product readily available online, in UK national stores and on floors around the country.

Whilst we can simulate many things within our own facilities, we need to know without doubt that the product is safe for use, and that children can play safely on a coated floor. Armourflex Hardwax Oil is independently laboratory tested and accredited for Food and Toy Safety (EN1186-2002 and EN71-3).
