FLOOR SEALS & FINISHES EXCEEDING STANDARDS
Barrettine explains how Armourflex Hardwax Oil is developed and manufactured in the UK, and provides enduring understated elegance for wood floors.
When selecting raw materials, performance cannot come before safety. Gone are the days of lead paint and asbestos plasters, every ingredient is sourced from trustworthy suppliers around the globe and our in-house Safety experts ensure all formulations are acceptable for commercial and retail use.

The development process then begins. Initially, critical properties such as appearance and adhesion need to be confirmed. Armourflex Hardwax Oil is enhancing, but in a natural, subtle way that keeps floors feeling like real wood with finish options in both matt and satin. It absorbs like an oil, avoiding the plastic-feel of a high film thickness, but with the soft look and texture of a wax. It’s a feel that invites bare feet and contented pets to snooze in the sun.

Armourflex Hardwax Oil is a high-performance coating offering a natural and elegant finish for interior wood floors. The ArmourFlex brand represents premium woodcare products from Barrettine, a family-owned business based in Bristol, who independently design, develop and manufacture products to the highest standards.
Developing a wood coating is not a simple task. Natural wood is a beautiful, but complex and inconsistent material. Unlike plastic or metal, wood will flex, swell, absorb, stain and scratch if not adequately protected, and designing a coating to cover all of these complex variables requires time and dedication.
At Barrettine, we are experts in wood care. With roots going back to the Bristol Dockyards in 1879, we have a long history of designing products which perform when it’s needed, and the Armourflex Hardwax Oil is no exception. We understand that testing doesn’t stop in the laboratory – you need a product which protects the natural beauty of real wood floors in real life, so anything developed at the bench must also be thoroughly field tested. We start at the beginning, asking which qualities are needed, then the dedicated laboratory team use their industry knowledge to draft the formulations and meet these needs. These formulations are put through a curated selection of EN Standards, plus even tougher unique in-house test procedures.
Appearance is a subjective thing and difficult to measure but using Colourimeters and Glossmeters we are able to select objectively for the appearance we want, guaranteeing consistency. Below the surface within the pores of the wood grain, Armourflex Hardwax Oil takes a firm hold to ensure that flaking or peeling are not a problem, confirmed by Adhesion Testing.

Different wood types give different aesthetics to a room, and the wood grain tells a story of a tree growing in sun, wind and rain. From soft pine to dense iroko, no two planks are the same and Armourflex Hardwax Oil protects them all. The coating will stretch, bend and breathe with the wood, tested to ensure that the necessary flexibility and elasticity is present.
Service life, of course, is critical for any flooring and at Barrettine we have put extensive effort into combatting the common pitfalls – scratch, stain and abrasion resistance.
Stain testing is neat and colourful, but real life is a real test.
