We hear the latest from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. on their reformulated and re-launched Stycco Flex adhesive.
THE PERFECT FORMULA
With recent technology advancements resulting in higher- performing adhesives than ever before, F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has launched a reformulated version of their market leading, rapid curing, flexible adhesive, Stycco Flex, which is now also recommended for installing PVC flooring accessories including skirting, capping and coving.
The highly versatile, hybrid tube adhesive is well known for its ability to bond almost any absorbent or non-absorbent material found in the flooring and construction industries. The high strength build-up and fast curing time means it can secure stair nosings and trims, without the need for mechanical fixings, in as little as 60 minutes. It can also be used to bond two impervious surfaces together.
ENHANCED QUALITIES New Stycco Flex has improved application properties, with reduced viscosity and better nip-off qualities making it easier to gun out with less waste and no mess. The ability to apply to vertical substrates has been improved to ensure there is no slipping or sliding when using it to bond accessories in these types of situations.
The new formulation also has enhanced dimensional stability and excellent plasticiser resistance, which enables 100% compatibility with PVC accessories. The high strength gain and strong bond performance of Stycco Flex restricts the movement of PVC accessories that occurs with potential temperature fluctuations or extremities over the lifetime of an installation. This gives the advantage of eradicating gapping at joints, which ensures that there is no breeding ground for bacteria and is an important benefit in clinical or biologically sensitive environments. Its solvent-free and hazard-free properties mean it is now an excellent alternative to traditional contact adhesives in such environments.

The excellent gap-filling qualities of Stycco Flex also make it ideal for installing vertical flooring accessories on rough surfaces. The adhesive can be sanded down and subsequently painted with most water-based paints. It is also water resistant, and, as such, can tolerate wet cleaning without any detriment to the bond performance.
CASE STUDY Along with other F. Ball products, Stycco Flex was used in the refurbishment of a thirty-year-old Routemaster bus to create a library for children at Tolworth Nursery, Infant and Junior School in Surrey, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.
The rapid curing adhesive was used to attach the aluminium nosings to the stairs of the bus, which saved any need for mechanical fixing. The entire flooring installation was undertaken free of charge by local contractor Eric Miller Flooring, and F. Ball donated all of their products used in the refurbishment, which included levelling compounds as well as adhesives.
Commenting on the job, Eric Miller said: “It was a bit of an unusual project; I had never installed flooring on a bus before! F. Ball very kindly donated the products for this job but we use them all the time because they’re incredibly reliable, and they always do exactly what they say on the tin.”
