GRADUATING IN STYLE

Tile supplier Solus Ceramics has brought a touch of sophistication to De Montfort University’s Vijay Patel building with the use of its elegant Monolith range.

Home to art and design, De Montfort University’s Vijay Patel building is the centerpiece of a £136m Campus Transformation Project, providing the finest facilities for both students and academics.

The extraordinary 27,000m2 building was designed by CPMG

Architects Limited and, the won the award for ‘New Build complementing the Historic Built Environment of the City of Leicester’. The building’s construction is split into three main areas: the arts tower development, the design wing and the food court. The main advantage of the new centre is that it brings all of the art and design subjects all together under one roof.

At the heart of the building in the design atrium, floor tiles from Solus Ceramics’ Monolith range take centre stage. A concrete inspired range, the Monolith tiles provide a huge amount of character and offer architects and designers the scope to create an endless amount of unique designs.

Anna Amin, Senior Interior Designer and Group Leader at CPMG Architects Limited, said of the project: “The brief set out by the client was to create a building that was not only visually, stunning, but it also needed to be practical and engaging for the students to work in.

“For the interior, we wanted to reflect the activities that the students were carrying out in their studies. As the building is used for design purposes, we decided to incorporate a raw theme throughout, reflecting the materials that the students would be using within their projects.

“We selected Solus Ceramics’ Monolith tiles as they encompassed the feel of raw materials and brought an industrial feel to the building, which was exactly what we were looking for. We chose these tiles not only for the aesthetic qualities but also because it met the client’s needs with its non-slip and durable qualities.

“Working with Solus Ceramics made our tile choice so much easier. We were provided with samples and in-depth information regarding the versatility of the tiles and the fantastic selection of colours available.”

Paul Shepherd, PR Executive at Solus Ceramics, said: “The Vijay Patel building has been a fantastic project to revisit, especially seeing how it has already made such an architectural statement in the region. The characteristics of the Monolith range make a great choice for the size of the building, creating a solid foundation that presents a stunning aesthetic.”
