Absolute sponger
Safety flooring is extremely important to any facility, but it can be extremely difficult to clean effectively. Tomorrow’s Cleaning Editor, Charlotte Taylor, looks at how melamine sponge technology can help.
When it comes to floorcare there are a whole host of options to choose from, from your more basic of mops, to the latest in floorcare machine technology. Each is better suited to a different application, from carpet to tile, there is something available for every type of floor we can think to lay our feet on.
While this may be true, there is a regular problem that many of you may encounter – safety flooring. Designed with the ultimate non-slip properties in mind, safety flooring is made up of a varying degree of ridges, nodules and grains that grip the sole of a foot or shoe, thus lessening the likelihood of a trip or fall.
We see this type of flooring on a regular basis, from busy shops and shopping malls - where footfall is high and the risk of slips is at an all time high with food and drink consumption and the risk of bad weather, to hospitals – where safety is paramount for obvious reasons.
While this type of floor is excellent at its job – keeping people safe - it can be extremely difficult to clean; with dirt becoming ingrained between each ridge and building up over time, becoming more and more difficult to penetrate. Even the most advanced of machines can struggle to lift the dirt from each small rivet, because it isn’t easily accessible for large
scrubber dryer heads as this needs more intense and isolated cleaning.
While we can never achieve a perfect clean, with dirt and bacteria multiplying at a steady rate, safety flooring can harbour an alarming level of dirt and grime and this just isn’t acceptable in places such as hospitals or healthcare establishments where both safety and hygiene are of a top priority.
A product that does work particularly well with safety flooring is the Meleco Floor Pad. The Meleco Floor Pad is made from melamine foam, which makes it a polymeric cleaning product.
This means that it is made up of thousands of small structures and holes that cut through dirt, while the sponge-like qualities help to mould it completely to the surface of the floor, enabling it to reach the difficult ridges typical to safety flooring. It wears away slowly over time, with minimal residue, which is completely safe and doesn’t damage your floor.
Not only is it effective against stubborn, ingrained dirt, it also requires minimal waste as all you need to do is lightly spray your floor with water. This not only eliminates the need for buckets of water or a prepared solution (resulting in waste and chemicals) but it also reduces the drying time and the time the floor will be out of action due to safety concerns. Typical of a sponge, the Meleco Floor Pad absorbs the dirt and residue, leaving your floor clean and dry within a matter of minutes.
The pad can be used in conjunction with the widely available and popular Numatic Multimop MM30 – you just attach the pad to the mop and use it as you would an ordinary flat mop. The pads can then be removed and replaced as and when they wear down.
So, the next time you have a problem with safety flooring; why not give the Meleco Floor Pad a test? Better to be safe, than sorry.
