Home working is something we need to
consider more of, particularly from a logistics point of view. In terms of where we are based in Cork, we have a big traffic issue here in Little Island so it is something we have to look at increasing for the future.

Abodoo Abodoo is a free-to-access site for remote jobs founded by Wexford couple Vanessa Tierney and Ben Wainwright. Vanessa tells us how this new employment website will help to support remote working in Ireland.
I’d been working remotely in recruitment for seven years, and I started to see a trend: companies were becoming more and more comfortable with hiring via Skype. IDA Ireland was a client and they were noticing interest
from companies like Shopify who
wanted to locate in Ireland and were open to the idea of remote working, and what did the remote working talent
landscape look like
“Businesses are now realising they
here. Before Abodoo, there was no data. Existing job boards are predominantly
built on a keyword match which means that the accuracy tends to be poor when receiving CVs for a job, or as a candidate’s experience of receiving job alerts, the matching elements are not strong. The idea was to create a smart technology platform that was easy for an employer to use that had a low barrier to entry – we have made it free to access, we only charge
on result. From the candidate’s
perspective, instead of working a zero contract from home, they could now have a professional career, with salaries of €30,000-€250,000 a year, from home. Abodoo has been in development
into through Abodoo. As an employer, the first benefit of remote
working is access to talent. There is a talent shortage globally and if you consider the parents who want to return to work but are opting not to because of the cost of childcare on top of commuting time, it doesn’t make sense. They are now entering the workforce through this solution. You have people who are perhaps slightly older and don’t wish to commute anymore, we’ve got millenials who don’t see the need to be in an office every day. This whole new talent pool could double overnight if companies are open-minded. The
second benefit for a
year, and we spent a lot of time building the platform to be very smart and intuitive. The icing on the cake was getting the sponsorship deal with Open Eir, Ireland’s largest supplier of wholesale broadband, because it solidified that
big companies see
really this
as the future. Open Eir are bringing high-speed fibre
broadband to the home and business. They have currently connected 1.6 million people and that will go to 1.9 million by the end of next year. They are educating people about what is possible with fibre: you can do your job, you can develop software, work in finance, and it all can be done remotely. We now have people who
are just getting
connected in the midlands and they no longer have to drive hours to work in Dublin. It’s a real game changer. Businesses are now realising they don’t
have to be city dependent, they don’t have to be in Cork or Dublin city, so hubs are created. You have 3.5 million Irish people abroad and a lot of them want to come home, and they want to work remotely in rural Ireland. It’s a whole new audience that companies can tap

retention. Dell have 35 per cent of their workforce globally working from home and they say not only is the talent pool more diverse, but
they’re happier and they are
being retained longer. Retention of your staff can go up by 50 per cent. Financially, you are saving on rents and
rates. The average saving per year is €10,000 per headcount. If people are happier they tend to be more productive, so productivity rates go up, they average over eight per cent increase and some companies are noting 20 per cent. More and more companies have CSR policies and this is environmentally friendly, as we are helping take cars off the road. There are so many pockets of talent around
Ireland but there is no centralised platform for them to communicate and look for jobs, and that’s what Abodoo is going to do. We launched in September of this year and
within the first few weeks we had over 1,000 professionals
in Ireland across FinTech,
marketing, sales and technology, register and want
to start working immediately. People
need security if they are going to work remotely and Abodoo is looking to fill that gap.
