WMEA News Continued from page 41

Plans are already underway for the 2025 WMEA Annual Meetings with Legislators to be held in February. Consider joining this effort to impact the future of music education when the sign-up opens this fall.

Resources You Can Use

The Advocacy Assistance Team consists of a group of music educators ready to help teachers facing challenging situ- ations. This team will help with topics like staffing cuts, changes to scheduling that might have a negative impact on music classes, budget reductions and more. Teachers looking for help can get quickly connected with experts by simply filling out a request.

Wendy Buehl (top left) and Leyla Sanyer (top right) meet with Wisconsin State Rep. Francesca Hong (D), who represents the 76th

Assembly District.

Educators in their first few years of teaching might find they could use access to supportive conversations with experienced music teachers. One of WMEA’s newest services to members is the Early Career Music Teacher Collaboration Project. The goals for this program are to support early career music teachers as they acclimate to new teaching environments and help them build a professional network. By sharing information and re- sources, both early career teachers and more experienced teachers benefit from ideas for these unprecedented times in education. If you would like to connect with this opportunity, please go to the link to sign up.

Membership Chris Powers, Membership Chair

Do you have a student teacher or practicum student? If college students are members of NAfME/WMEA in their graduation year, they are eligible for an introductory membership during their first year of teaching at a reduced rate. If your student teacher or practicum student is not yet a member, have them use this link to join or renew NAfME/WMEA membership and start explor- ing the resources available there. Thank you for your continued support through your own annual membership renewal, as well!

NAfME National Assembly Richard Tengowski,

North Central Division President

NAfME will host the National Assembly in Reston, Virginia, on June 10-13, 2024. The National Assembly gathers the national and state leaders who collaboratively work on music education advocacy and education initiatives. Topics will include: 1) the Music Teacher Profession Initiative (MTPI) which addresses

barriers to equity in music teacher recruitment, education, and retention, 2) the Small School Initiative which recognizes key issues and effective strategies that serve small school teachers and students, and 3) the effects of AI in music education. All National Assembly participants will visit Capitol Hill on June 12 to meet with legislators, in hopes of preserving and advanc- ing music education as part of core curriculum in United States schools.

WMEA Capitol Concerts

Throughout March, WMEA sponsors school music group con- certs in the State Capitol Rotunda. The concerts kick off as a celebration of NAfME’s Music In Our Schools Month offering groups an opportunity to perform in this beautiful Wisconsin landmark. WMEA members may apply to have their school music groups perform in Capitol Concerts. Congratulations to all who performed this year! See a sampling of photos on next page. The deadline for application period is October 1 – December 1 of the year preceding the concerts. Learn more at wmeamusic. org/capitol-concerts.
