How Technology Can Transform Your Tri-M Music Honor Society!
Sarah Lemon, WMEA State Chair, Tri-M Music Honor Society Stephanie Keller, Guest Writer
In response to the school shutdowns of 2020, we were required to adapt rapidly in many as- pects of our lives. One of the most significant changes has been the surge in our reliance on technology, funda- mentally altering how we teach, learn and collaborate. As we returned to full, in-person schooling in the fall of 2021, we thought it was important to recog- nize our academi- cally capable and
musically gifted students by reintroduc- ing our Tri-M Music Honor Society. We embraced the digital revolution like never before and utilized technology to bring new life into Tri-M to work on the club’s visibility within our music classes, our school and the community. Below you’ll find some ideas we used with our Tri-M Music Honor Society, and hopefully you can see yourself using some of these ideas with your ensembles as well!
Concert Etiquette Video
Our first big project utilizing technology has become a yearly tradition looked for- ward to by all of our members each year: The Concert Etiquette Video. Tri-M stu- dents brainstorm ideas related to concert etiquette, create short, 10-second skits and perform scenarios to be filmed by a student on their smartphone. Once the footage is completed, a student-elected video editor will add background music, text and sound effects using a program such as iMovie. The Concert Etiquette Video is then shown
on the screen prior to all music concerts. It’s a great way to teach our audience appropri- ate concert etiquette, while also providing visibility for Tri-M!
Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM)
During March, here are some ways we use technology to spread awareness for Music In Our Schools Month:
• Students create a Spotify playlist – Students complete a Google Form to request music to play during passing periods for the month of March.
• Staff is Musical Teacher Google Form Survey – To show students that music is part of the lives of teachers and staff members in our school, we created a Google Form to collect information to be turned into posters for teachers to display in their classrooms. Questions on the Google Form were taken from this free printable resource.
• Teacher Talent Video – Students recorded video clips on a smart- phone and stitched them together using iMovie! This was a video of some teacher talents in our building that we showed at our annual talent show.
Utilizing Google Apps
If your school uses Google Applications, there are so many ways you can use them to your advantage! Check out our Tri-M website created with Google Sites where you can find our Google Form Application, see an example of how students sign up for volunteering opportunities using Google Sheets and where we post our meeting agendas.

Learning Management Systems (LMS) (Canvas, Google Classroom, etc.)
Consider creating a class for your Tri-M students using your school’s preferred LMS and use it as a way to communicate, as well as collect and distribute documents electronically. We use our Canvas page to assign each student a Volunteer Tracking Sheet which they can use to help keep track of their hours for the year.
Social Media Presence
Social media is a great way to showcase your ensembles and clubs. Our district allows students to co-run social media ac- counts for our activities. Our Tri-M Insta- gram is run by the advisors and our Tri-M vice president. We use our Instagram to post about Tri-M events and utilize Canva to create our eye-catching designs!
We hope you find inspiration from these resources and that you consider how uti- lizing technology can help with the suc- cess of your Tri-M Music Honor Society and/or your ensembles. If you have more questions about what Tri-M Music Honor Society could look like in your school and how technology can help you start a new chapter, feel free to contact us. Wishing everyone the best of luck finishing up this academic year!
