Fully Automated Platform for Molecular Diagnostic Laboratories A fully integrated solution, the new and completely automated RIDA®

UNITY system for molecular detection of infectious diseases throughout Europe. “With the RIDA® UNITY system combines sample extraction, PCR setup, real-time PCR and result

evaluation in a common workflow. Leading biotechnology company R-Biopharm AG has announced that it has received the CE mark and will begin selling the RIDA®

UNITY system, R-Biopharm is purposefully

taking the path from a provider of individual solutions to a system provider in the field of molecular diagnostics,” stated Christian Dreher, CEO of R-Biopharm. “We are very happy to make this system solution available to all molecular biology laboratories throughout Europe.”

UNITY system combines the various steps in the analysis of patient samples into an integrated workflow - nucleic acid extraction, PCR setup, subsequent real-time PCR and the evaluation of the results run fully automatically without user intervention. The ready-to-use RIDA® significantly reduce the preparation times in the laboratory. The RIDA®

The RIDA® UNITY reagents UNITY Universal Extraction Kit allows the universal extraction of nucleic acids from

both gastrointestinal and respiratory patient samples in a common workflow and was specifically developed and optimised by R-Biopharm. Up to six different RIDA®

UNITY PCR assays can now be individually combined and processed.

The software especially developed for the RIDA®UNITY system supports the user with its simple and intuitive operation - from loading the required consumables and positioning the PCR reagents on the deck up to evaluating the final results. The RIDA® facilitates everyday work in the laboratory.

New Heating Circulation Thermostat

Innovative Ultra-compact Czerny-Turner Spectrometer Showcasing at WWEM 2022

AP Technologies is pleased to announce they will be demonstrating OtO Photonics’ innovative ‘Bullet-series’ spectrometers on stand H2 at WWEM this October.

Bullet spectrometers bring the sensitivity and resolution advantages of the classic Czerny-Turner cavity design but replace the conventional arrangement of separate collimator and focussing mirror with a single complex concave reflector design.

The design of the Bullet series enables a significant reduction in the overall size of the spectrometer - as small as 36mm x 40mm x 25mm (~36cm³ ) including connectors and control board.

OtO are offering two versions of the Bullet design - ‘SilverBullet’ is based on a 1024-pixel CMOS sensor for 180nm to 1100nm performance whilst ‘RedBullet’ utilises a 128-pixel InGaAs sensor for 900-1700nm sensitivity.

With the new Chili, Peter Huber Kältemaschinenbau AG presents a compact, low volume, hydraulically sealed heating thermostat for use with closed temperature control circuits. Part of the Unistat product family, the Chili is the smallest heating thermostat in the Huber range and is appropriate for use with Marlotherm as a heat transfer fluid. The device has a working temperature range of 65 to 300°C and achieves a temperature stability of +/-0.02 K. Measuring just 240 x 427 x 393 mm (W x D x H), only a small space for installation is required. It is small enough to be a direct replacement for existing ‘open-bath’ heaters. Due to its technical characteristics and competitive pricing, the Chili is ideally suited for e.g. distillation tasks in chemistry, pharmaceuticals and botanical extraction. The hydraulically sealed temperature control circuit prevents the formation of oil vapours and oxidation. This results in an increased lifespan of the heat transfer fluid adding further value. An external cooling coil (unregulated) is available as an optional accessory.

As with all Unistats, the new Chili impresses with excellent thermodynamic characteristics and a professional range of functions. The Chili guarantees high- precision, reproducible thermoregulation results with reduced heating times and wide temperature ranges. Efficient energy management minimises operating costs and economic operation.

The Pilot ONE multi-touch controller has a 5.7” touchscreen display with intuitive, icon based menu navigation. Important functions and settings are accessible in a fast and simple manner thanks to the user-creatable favourites menu. Integrated USB and Ethernet ports enable connection to a PC or network for remote control, monitoring and data recording.

All Bullet series spectrometers are based on 8051 microcontrollers which allow for short integration time, fast readout, highly accurate trigger timing and low power consumption. Power and control is via USB with the addition of six I/O pins for connecting external devices. As with all of OtO’s spectrometers the Bullet series spectrometers are supplied with their SpectraSmart spectral measurement software and a full Software Development Kit.

SilverBullet is initially available with three standard spectral ranges, 180-850nm, 200-850nm and 300-1100nm and a choice of 25µm, 50µm and 100µm slit width. Resolution ranges from 3nm to 15nm FWHM dependent upon the wavelength range and slit width selected.

RedBullet covers the range 900nm to 1700nm with a 50µm slit width giving resolution of <15nm FWHM across the full range. To see the new Bullet series spectrometers visit AP Technologies on H2 at WWEM.

Greener Solutions for Autoclave Energy Efficiency

With steam sterilisation temperatures and pressures well established, autoclaving within a vessel of a known size requires a predefined quantity of energy. To be energy-efficient during thermal sterilisation, autoclaves must reach - and hold - a sterilisation temperature

and pressure without heat loss to the environment, but also drop back to room temperature and pressure effectively during cooling stages.

Astell are innovators in energy efficiency - their autoclaves: capture and reuse heat energy that would otherwise be lost; use the minimum necessary volume of water to generate steam; generate that steam very quickly to minimise the opportunities for heat loss.

Yet these technical developments can only go so far, and Astell’s greatest energy saving happens before the autoclave is ever switched on.

Astell request that their potential customers supply detail of what they plan to sterilise. This allows the autoclave manufacturer, founded in the Victorian era, to produce devices that include only the specific hardware required to meet the user’s needs.

“Constructing autoclaves for the end user’s specific needs allows us to save our customers from large bills,” said Sales & Marketing Director, Paul Birchmore. “It also allows them to help save the planet by keeping the resources that would go into producing unnecessary components in the ground.”
