Laboratory Products 13 Track your Samples by their ID

Safe and distinct sample ID is key for successful results in the lab. The Eppendorf SafeCode system enables a safe sample vessel tracking at all stages of the lab workflow: from the bench to the long-term storage in the ULT freezer.

SafeCode is based on a multi-level coding of the consumables based on prelabelled data matrix codes. The coding can be read by the Eppendorf RackScan instrument, any handheld data matrix scanner, or even your smartphone.

The reliable SafeCode cryostorage vial family is now expanded by a series of barcoded classic conical tubes: 5 mL, 15 mL, and 50 mL for daily routine usage at the bench. The well-known Eppendorf conical tubes with all their high-quality aspects are digitalised - on the tubes as well as for documentation purposes.

All SafeCode consumables can be tracked back by the Eppendorf dataport: specific support material like lot number, certificates, technical drawings, etc. are available online based on the consumable ID. Enhanced by these documentation files related to the specific vessel, the sample ID can automatically be transferred into the eLabNext software for sample location documentation as well as for process documentation. All support files of the vessel are automatically connected to this sample.

The SafeCode system is enhanced by the CryoCube® F740 ULT freezers, VisioNize® freezer notification/monitoring applications as well as the

eLabNext software as further building blocks for a smart and reliable sample handling solution of valuable samples in your lab. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/G2ZW

58181pr@reply-direct.com Determination of Aluminium and Zirconium in Antiperspirants

Antiperspirants contain zirconium aluminium chlorohydrates as active ingredients. Currently, the zirconium aluminium glycine (ZAG) complex is mainly used because it has been shown to be more effective. To evaluate the product quality, it is necessary to control the amount of both aluminium and zirconium in the ZAG complex. This determination can be done by complexometric titrations under different conditions according to the US Pharmacopeia (USP).

USP currently describes the assay of zirconium aluminium chlorohydrate complexes by two manual complexometric titrations after a laborious sample preparation procedure (digestion). This Application Note from Metrohm presents a complementary method that allows a consecutive determination after the sample preparation (digestion) of both metal ions in one beaker with an optical sensor and xylenol orange as an indicator.

ADVERTORIAL New Enhancements Enable Polarimeter to Tackle Difficult Samples

Bellingham + Stanley, a Xylem brand, has added further capabilities to its premier polarimeter, the ADP600 Series, since its launch last year. Not only is the instrument capable of measuring to four decimal places (°A) under Peltier temperature controlled conditions across the UV/Vis spectrum, a new addition, the ADS620P, is now able to measure dark sugar solutions in the near infrared wavelength (880 nm) when used with Celite®

clarifying agent. The use

of Celite negates the traditional but environmentally unfriendly lead acetate clarification method commonly used in the sugar industry today. Additionally, the instrument now displays POL alongside the measured sugar degrees (°Z) and calculated purity value.

Further enhancements benefit those wishing to operate with harsh chemicals such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) used as a base chemical or as a solvent within the pharmaceutical industry. HCl is aggressive to stainless steel tubes so measuring with standard XPC tubes becomes a problem. New glass tubes with PEEK endcaps are resistant to such chemical compounds and this combined with a new, optional, Hastelloy®

encased temperature sensor makes for corrosion free analysis of samples prepared with such harsh substances.

ADP600 Series of polarimeters are available as multiple, dual or single wavelength models, with readability of optical rotation to 4 decimal places. Now with XPC technology, Xylem’s patented Peltier temperature control system, the combination of precision optics with fast and reliable onboard temperature control, the ADP600 Series of multiple wavelength, high accuracy polarimeters are well suited to the demanding applications of regulated environments.

All ADP600 Series polarimeters feature latest firmware, meaning your touchscreen experience is not only intuitive but is also secure and compliant with a range of international standards including FDA regulation 21 CFR Part 11. ADP600 Series instruments are also compliant with pharmacopeia (BP/EP/USP/JP) as well as several other norms including relevant ASTM and AOAC methods.
