Laboratory Products 27 New Luminometer Designed to Accelerate and Simplify Mycoplasma Testing Announced

Lonza has further strengthened its extensive mycoplasma detection portfolio with the addition of the Lucetta™ 2 Luminometer, a single-tube system designed to simplify and accelerate mycoplasma detection in cell cultures. Pharmaceutical, biotechnology and academic researchers can now rely on this compact, portable and easy-to-use instrument to run Lonza’s MycoAlert™ Mycoplasma Detection Assays and obtain highly reliable results within just 20 minutes.

Mycoplasma contamination is one of the most common challenges facing cell-culture laboratories, and it can have a profound impact on cell integrity. However, some of the most widely used mycoplasma detection methods have been associated with time and quality ineffi ciencies. For example, the agar-and-broth procedure, although highly accurate, takes at least four weeks to complete, while the polymerase chain reaction method requires several hours with an increased likelihood for false positives and negatives.

Lonza’s Lucetta™ 2 Luminometer provides a wealth of features and benefi ts, including: high data-storage capacity for up to 2,000 single sample readings; compatibility with a variety of test tubes, from regular 1.5 or 2 ml microcentrifuge tubes to 5 ml polystyrene tubes; intuitive software that guides users through the MycoAlert™ Mycoplasma Detection Assay routine without requiring any prior training; easy transfer of results to a Microsoft Exce®

Cambridge Sensotec’s fl agship Rapidox 1100Z oxygen gas analyser has relaunched with a new look, features and fully upgraded software. First developed nearly ten years ago, the Rapidox 1100 oxygen gas analyser continues to be the company’s best-selling and most versatile oxygen instrument, due to its speed and accuracy of measurement, ease of use, calibration and ultra-long life sample pump.

The Rapidox 1100 gas analyser range includes a choice of oxygen sensors designed for measuring ppm levels to 100% gas, within inert atmospheres or gases containing VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), suiting a wide range of applications.

The updated Rapidox 1100Z has a new OLED screen which now delivers improved visibility from every angle, with four lines of information displayed. For low ppm oxygen gas measurements, the Rapidox 1100Z zirconia models now include an updated, superior zirconia planar sensor, providing faster and more accurate trace oxygen measurements.

With the use of an Ethernet adaptor, the new Rapidox can be connected directly to a network and accessed remotely via a PC in the same network or over the internet. The updated Rapidox software allows the user to turn their PC into a giant remote Rapidox display emulator. This is particularly useful for applications where the analyser is based in a remote laboratory and needs to be monitored from another location.

Modbus RTU is now installed as a standard communications protocol. Other new features include an enhanced calibration allowing up to fi ve separate test gases to be used. Individual calibration data, together with other critical parameters, are now stored and displayed in a new system info menu. The alarm relays now have a latching option to fall in line with standard equipment features. The password system has been updated and the screen display can now be confi gured to include balance gas values as well as the standard oxygen and pressure readings.

The Rapidox 1100 range is available with many sensor variations including a choice of two electrochemical oxygen sensors, one for low ppm measurements of 1ppm to 1% and another for 1–100% oxygen range. Electrochemical sensors are ideal for applications where VOC’s or fl ammable gases are present in the gas sample. Other special variations for measuring CO2

Premium Chromatography Media for TLC and HPTLC

Depending on the application, users of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) either want economical aluminium and polyester sheets or robust TLC glass plates for reliable analysis. MACHEREY-NAGEL - manufacturer of TLC products since 1961 - offers premium chromatography media for thin-layer chromatography.

TLC aluminium and polyester sheets Thin-layer chromatography is a widely used technique in routine analysis. Especially for qualitative analyses in organic synthesis economical aluminium or polyester sheets are used. ALUGRAM®

Xtra SIL G, silica 60 coated aluminium sheets, are easy and reliable to cut due to an optimised binder system. Furthermore, the silica layer shows an excellent separation effi ciency and SIL G are silica 60 coated polyester sheets with a binder system, completely stable in purely aqueous eluents. Both kind of sheets are available with or without UV indicator. Xtra sheets are coated with Nano-SIL G silica gel. The narrow fractionation of the particles allows sharper separations, shorter developing

times and an increased detection sensitivity compared to conventional silica layers. Modifi ed silicas like RP-18 W (octadecyl-modifi ed HPTLC silica layer) and further adsorbents like Alox N (aluminium oxide), CEL 300 (native fi brous cellulose) or POLYAMIDE-6 (ε-polycaprolactame) are also available on economical aluminium or polyester sheets.

TLC and HPTLC glass plates

Glass plates are mostly used for clinical, pharmaceutical, natural product and food analysis. Especially in instrumental thin-layer chromatography glass plates provide an advantageous handling. Furthermore, the photometric quantifi cation of analytes is more accurate.

The established ADAMANT glass plates exhibit an outstanding hardness and abrasion resistance of the layer due to an improved binder system. This allows labelling the plates.

The well-known SIL G plates show an alternative selectivity compared to other commercial silica plates. By using these plates previous separation problems can possibly be solved.

Nowadays, developments of new TLC plates are very rare. However, MACHEREY-NAGEL recently launched the new TLC glass plates SIL HD as well as Nano-SIL HD plates for HPTLC. These silica 60 plates are characterised by ‘High Defi nition’ properties at the detection with UV light. Moreover, TLC users benefi t from excellent staining properties for post-chromatographic detection using spray reagents.
