High-performance magnetic beads for immunoassay optimisation

AMSBIO has expanded its portfolio to include MagSi-STA beads, high-performance magnetic beads suitable for use as detection labels in magnetic immunoassays or as a solid support phase in immunoassays. These beads feature a silica matrix with covalently attached streptavidin, offering various sizes, chemistries, and binding capacities to optimise in vitro diagnostic applications.

To simplify bead selection for specific applications, AMSBIO has launched the MagSi-STA Trial kit. This kit is particularly valuable during the trial phase of assay development, providing 1ml samples of each of the eight MagSi-STA products for quick evaluation and selection based on application requirements.

MagSi-STA beads, based on a silica matrix, offer advantages such as lower background chemiluminescence and UV/VIS signals compared to alternative substrates like polystyrene. This characteristic enhances assay sensitivity and dynamic range, making MagSi-STA beads suitable for various assays, regardless of the readout method. The silica matrix ensures product stability across a wide pH range and under high ionic strength conditions.

AMSBIO’s extensive range of magnetic silica beads, including MagSi beads ranging from 150nm to 5μm, provides diverse options for biological applications. These beads are designed for the separation, concentration, and purification of biomolecules, specific cells, or cell compartments.

TÜV SÜD has introduced an automated testing system for hospital hygiene, focusing on the machine-washability of medical devices. This system assesses the durability and functionality of products like hospital beds, patient hoists, and walking aids after undergoing washing cycles. It evaluates factors such as surface finishes, electronics, plastic components, and movable parts’ resilience during the washing process.

Previously, manufacturers had to invest in their own washing systems or use hospital facilities for testing. However, TÜV SÜD’s experts can now provide rapid and reliable testing, enhancing the value of products and aiding in promotional efforts.

The testing adheres to industry standards, with specific criteria for the number of washing cycles devices must withstand. For example, medical beds are evaluated based on DIN EN 60601-2-52, which previously required 50 cycles but has been proposed to increase to 250 cycles in the latest standard draft. Similar standards exist for patient hoists and walking aids. TÜV SÜD has developed corresponding test procedures, considering factors like temperature, pH, and cleaning agents.

In Germany, where 20 million people are treated as hospital inpatients annually, machine reprocessing is becoming increasingly popular. Beds are taken to a central department, cleaned, disinfected, and dried with the push of a button, reducing the workload on nursing teams and minimising contact with potentially infectious surfaces.

The healthcare industry’s demand for efficient and reliable cleaning processes is growing, especially in the face of competition, rising costs, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Reliable hygiene measures are crucial in preventing infections, and TÜV SÜD’s testing system contributes to this goal.

From a sustainability perspective, the testing facility recycles about 75% of the water used in the washing process, saving energy and water. Further optimisation measures, such as heat recovery from wastewater and carbon-neutral energy generation through photovoltaics, are also being considered.

TÜV SÜD’s automated testing system enhances the hygiene and durability of medical devices, addressing the growing demand for efficient and reliable cleaning processes in healthcare settings, while also contributing to sustainability goals. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/zBwy

61198pr@reply-direct.com Advancing infectious disease diagnostics with smart pipetting solutions

Cormeum Lab Services, a pioneering clinical testing laboratory based in Louisiana, has revolutionised its infectious disease testing procedures with the aid of an array of pipetting solutions from Integra Biosciences. As the demand for their services surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, the laboratory acquired additional liquid handling instruments to cope with the increased workload, facilitating the expansion of its testing capabilities.

In response to the heightened demand for accurate diagnostics during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cormeum Lab Services was established. To enhance their efficiency, the facility adopted various Integra solutions, including VIAFLO electronic pipettes for ergonomic and efficient pipetting, VOYAGER adjustable tip spacing pipettes for parallel transfer of multiple samples across labware of different formats, and an ASSIST PLUS pipetting robot to automate workflows and process samples more quickly, reducing turnaround times from 10 hours to just 5 hours per test.

Leilani Graffagnini, Quality Manager in Laboratory Operations at Cormeum Lab Services, explained: “We introduced electronic and automated liquid handling solutions from Integra to handle a larger volume of COVID-19 samples daily. The pipettes have significantly improved our workflows; instead of pipetting samples individually, we can now transfer them row by row, and many of our protocols can even be performed hands-free thanks to the ASSIST PLUS. This has increased our efficiency while minimising the risk of human error, enabling our lab staff to focus on other tasks and their ongoing professional development.

“We can now provide industry-leading throughput and are confident in the quality and reliability of our results because Integra regularly calibrates the pipettes, giving us complete peace of mind that everything is functioning as it should. Additionally, the new pipettes have greatly aided us in staying at the forefront of diagnostics, as our enhanced capacity has enabled us to expand our range of diagnostic services, including urine, wound, nail, women’s health, and STI testing, as well as antibiotic resistance testing. Integra’s innovative solutions have allowed us to align with our clients’ needs and adapt to an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.”
