Particle Analyser Delivers Increased Reproducibility for Automatic Quality Inspection
Easier operation, superior functionality and optimised reproducibility of measurements are delivered to end- users by the Carl Zeiss particle analyser.
As well as particle analysis for technical purity, the microscope-based analysis and documentation system may also be used for the documentation of defects, materials analysis, porosity measurements of surfaces and biomedical applications in the pharmaceutical industry and medical technology sector.
Special functions for particle recognition enable fully automatic measurement without user intervention. Subsequent typification, such as reflecting or non- reflecting particles and fibres for instance, has also been optimised to make manual correction unnecessary. In addition, the SteREO Discovery range of stereomicroscopes and the Axio Imager range of upright microscopes may be fully motorised and driven by the software, with the system configuration stored with the results. Consequently, consistent quality of measured results from batch-to-batch can be guaranteed, regardless of a change in user. In addition, particle standard and special specimen holders are available for system calibration.
Internationally recognised standards and directives, such as VDA Vol. 19/ISO 16232 and ISO 4406, are implemented within the software and company-specific standards or demands outside the standards may also be implemented easily by the user. Also, the directives of the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) can be implemented for applications in the pharmaceutical industry and medical technology sector.
The Particle Analyser software may be implemented with either the SteREO Discovery range of stereomicroscopes or the Axio Imager range of upright microscopes. Motorised polarisation components on the microscope optimise automatic differentiation between reflecting and non- reflecting particles.
Both microscope ranges include both a manual and a fully motorised version. Existing microscope systems can be retrofitted into a particle analyser on request.
Circle no. 516 Quick and Simple Starter Kits for Freeze Drying
The benchtop ‘BTK’ range of freeze dryers from Biopharma has been popular in universities and research laboratories for many years due to its ease of use, flexibility and extensive range of accessories. But when starting out in freeze drying the number of options can seem daunting. To help simplify the process we’ve put together 4 packages of the most popular sets. These systems come complete with all the necessary adapters and connections to get started – the only other thing that’s required is a vacuum pump, which we are able to supply if one is not available.
The packages on offer are: BT2KES - A great starter system, flexible, cost-conscious and easy to use. BT4KXL - A system for those who need a bit more out of their freeze dryer, with a larger capacity manifold and colder condenser. BT4KZL – An ultra-low -103ºC condenser and a stainless steel ‘vertical’ manifold, this is for processing non-aqueous solutions. BT6KEL - This system has been put together for those who need to process larger volumes, with a 9 litre condenser and extra shelving. Offering these units in packages also means we can cut costs, meaning savings for you typically in the region of 2-3%.
BTKs are commonly used in universities and research laboratories for applications as diverse as agrichemical research, biotechnology, food science and pharmacology.
Intelligent Evaporation
Heidolph UK have launched the new Hei-VAP range of intelligent rotary evaporators from Heidolph. The new range with value, advantage and precision options are the next generation of rotary evaporators designed around improved safety, reliability, with greater modularity and performance.
The Hei-VAP range features a novel detachable operating panel, which allows precise control of all-important parameters outside the fume hood. Advantage and Precision options feature an easy to read LCD display. In addition, an upgraded design of heating bath has enhanced safety features, heats to an unmatched 210°C, accepts large flasks up to 5 litres and features a convenient pouring spout for spill free emptying.
All Hei-VAP units feature a new integrated flask clamp that has been designed to aid removal of flasks from the drive, without jamming. The patented glass vapour tube, clamping sleeve and graphite filled PTFE seal are engineered to reduce wear and consumption of spares by up to 75%.
The new entry level Hei-VAP Value offers analogue control with an easy to use
hand lift at an affordable budget and is ideal for all standard evaporating applications. The mid range Hei-VAP Advantage features a LCD digital display for control of rotation speed, heating bath and display of vapour temperature.
The Advantage model also includes a new automatic process timer, which turns off the evaporator at a pre- programmed time and on motorised lift models, removes the evaporating flask from the bath.
The top of the range Hei-VAP Precision has integrated vacuum control and is designed for the most demanding applications. The Hei-VAP Precision has a large colour LCD graphic display with vacuum control for automated distillations. The unit is ideal for all kinds of difficult applications and easily prevents foaming, excessive bubbling and bumping.
The Hei-VAP Precision’s microprocessor control allows users to store programs for common applications, pre- programme vacuum gradients, control process time and includes a USB data interface.

UK Biobank Sample Processing Capability Increased
RTS Life Science is pleased to announce that they have been selected to supply four Saliva and RNA Stabilised Blood Processing Systems to the UK Biobank.
UK Biobank, a project aiming to advance public health in the 21st Century, was officially opened by Princess Anne on 28th July 2009, and is now over half way through its collection of participant samples across the UK. An additional two
samples, saliva and blood for RNA isolation, will be collected from the remaining participants and the new RTS automation will allow up to 800 samples to be processed per day.
RTS originally supplied a High Throughput Blood fractionation system for UK Biobank to process centrifuged EDTA, serum separator and plasma separator tubes, enabling the retrieval of the plasma, serum, buffy coat and red blood cells. Since the implementation of these systems, two years ago, RTS has released a second generation ‘blood fractionation’ system (ABF500).
The ABF system has now been refined so that it can process saliva and RNA stabilised blood samples with only minimal instrument preparation required to run either sample type. The user only needs to change the deck layout and select the correct software process.
The new ASP (Automated Sample Processor) 800 will process up to 800 saliva or RNA stabilised blood samples per day into two and six 850ul aliquots respectively. RTS’ eSprint software will provide complete sample tracking and the production of a full audit trail.
