Rapid Solutions for Detecting Malaria The Clearview®

Sensitive and Specific Kits for Proteoglycan Research Malaria rapid test range from Inverness Medical provides a

Malaria P.f. is a qualitative test for detecting the most common, virulent and deadly malaria causing parasite, Plasmodium falciparum; Clearview®

complete, rapid diagnostic solution for in vitro detection of malarial antigens in whole blood. This simple and easy to use test is available in two different formats: Clearview®

Malaria Combo detects and differentiates between the Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae and P. ovale antigens.

Both of these rapid tests detect antigens from capillary or venous whole blood and provide easy to interpret results in just 15 minutes. Malaria is a parasitic disease spread via Anopheles mosquitoes, and can cause severe flu- like symptoms. With an estimated 1–2 million deaths each year attributed to malaria, morbidity, mortality, and transmission can be significantly reduced if infection is accurately diagnosed and effectively treated.

Ideal for remote health centres, the Clearview Malaria rapid test range is manufactured to meet the harsh conditions of malaria endemic regions. The tests can withstand high temperatures, no refrigeration, and require little training for accurate use. As such, these rapid diagnostic tests play a pivotal role in the Roll Back Malaria Partnership’s Global Malaria Action Plan, where quick diagnosis of the correct malarial strain will enable fast initiation of the correct treatment. Furthermore, the rapid spread of anti- malarial drug resistance will be minimised, as treatment can be highly targeted and controlled.

Specialists in high purity reagents for glycobiology and glycoanalysis, amsbio, have announced a number of new and unique kits for proteoglycan research.

A new sandwich ELISA kit for measurement of Keratan Sulfate (KS) at levels previously undetectable is now available. The new kit offers 10x the sensitivity of previous ELISA kits (down to 0.25 ng/ml) enabling measurement of KS in various animal samples, including serum and synovial fluid, where KS is present only at trace levels.

Hyaluronic Acid (Hyaluronan) is a glycosaminoglycan polymer critical for maintaining the cellular integrity of the extracellular matrix and in its lower molecular weight form participating in many biological processes. Based upon a competitive protein binding inhibition method a new assay kit from amsbio offers sensitive and highly specific measurement of Hyaluronic acid in body fluids, culture medium, and tissue extracts.

Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG) are known to play important structural and functional roles in linking the component proteins of the basement membrane, controlling the permeability properties of the membranes and signal transduction. To date a handicap in HSPG research has been a lack of a sensitive and more importantly specific test for human heparanase activity.

Furthermore HSPG research has also suffered from a lack of a purified enzyme or instability of the cloned enzyme limits assay design. To address these shortfalls amsbio has launched two new non-radioactive assay kits that offer sensitive and specific quantitative detection of heparanase in cell culture supernatants, human plasma, biological fluids and tissue samples. Supplied in a convenient 96-well plate format the kits are fast and easy-to-use.

amsbio offers an extensive range of products for glycobiology research including carbohydrates, enzymes, antibodies and assay kits

ADVERTORIAL Omega Diagnostics Launch Pathozyme Elisasure

A New Universal Kit Targeted For All Elisa Kit Users And For Manual And Automated Systems

Omega Diagnostics Ltd (Omega), the Scottish based diagnostics company, are pleased to announce the launch of the Pathozyme ElisaSure kit. A new universal kit targeted for all ELISA kit users and for manual and automated systems.

Omega is a well established developer and manufacturer of clinical diagnostic assays and specialises in serological tests for

a variety of diseases such as Syphilis, Tuberculosis, Malaria and Dengue Fever, serving the healthcare needs of millions of people worldwide.

Instruments and Equipment are an essential part of Microplate ELISA based test procedures. Their performance must be reproducible within known parameters between maintenance periods and after repair or irregular results by easy and convenient methods.

The Pathozyme ElisaSure kit provides the ability to test all Microtitre Plate Washers, Microplate Readers, manual and automated pipetting devices. Regular use of the Pathozyme ElisaSure test kit will produce documented records evidencing equipment performance and will assist in the early detection of deficiencies and assist in troubleshooting by incorporating four separate equipment checks.

Regular monitoring will, in the event of encountering unexpected results during sample testing, provide a means of comparison between current and historical performance and, by incorporation into the laboratories maintenance schedule, provide confidence in the performance of equipment and to attain and preserve accreditation.

Pathozyme ElisaSure is available for sale in the UK through our exclusive distributor Biohit UK. For further information or a product demonstration please contact Graham Johnston: Grahamj@biohit.co.uk or Tel: 01803 315900.
