Safety and Hazard Containment

Independent Tests Confirm Fabric Permeation Resistance to Chemicals in Protective Clothing Recent tests conducted by an independent accredited laboratory show that Tyvek®

Sporicidal Wipes you can Actually see Work

L1431N fabric has a

high barrier performance that provides excellent protection against liquid permeation. To most people all protective coveralls look the same and selecting the correct one to offer the best protection against liquid penetration and permeation can be a task in itself. And so to assess the barrier performance and therefore aid selection, permeation tests (according to EN ISO 6529 – Method A) were conducted to determine the breakthrough times of commonly used chemicals with Tyvek®

, MPF (Microporous Film)

and SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) – materials that are frequently used for type 4, 5, and 6 single-use chemical protective clothing. To conduct the permeation test and determine the actual and normalised breakthrough times, 40% sodium hydroxide and 18% sulphuric acid, two commonly used chemicals in the industry, were selected. With a breakthrough time of over 480 minutes with two water- based inorganic chemicals, Tyvek®

offered a higher barrier than the Microporous film, while SMS showed

immediate breakthrough. Penetration tests were also conducted according to EN ISO 6530 standard and showed virtually no difference between the three materials, indicating the liquid barrier of the three materials seems to be of equal protection. However, this standard stipulates just one minute of exposure to the hazardous substance, which is rarely the case in working conditions. When tested according to EN ISO 6529 - Method A, that determines the resistance of materials to permeation by liquids and gases, it was revealed that Tyvek®

offers long-term protection of up to eight hours. Tyvek® is an excellent material because the continuous, strong, high density polyethylene fibres do not

shed and it does not contain additives or fillers. This smooth surface repels both liquids and particles, offering a very high chemical barrier in its category. Tyvek®

is also extremely durable, highly resistant to tear and abrasion but still breathable and because of the smooth surface of the finished fabric it remains soft to touch and is extremely flexible, not restricting movement.

To help customers make the right choice, DuPont has developed a series of videos featuring Professor Victor Tytonius, the cyber scientist who specialises in worker protection and chemical protective clothing and materials. Professor Tytonius carries out scientific experiments to reveal the performance of three non-woven structures – Tyvek® Classic and Classic Plus, Tyvek®

, MPF and SMS. The range of Tyvek® Dual and most recently Tyvek® Labo. Circle no. 516 garments includes Tyvek® Industry, Tyvek®

Tristel Sporicidal Surface Wipes are the latest addition to the ‘Tristel for Surfaces’ product range and provide a practical and highly effective way to decontaminate all hard surfaces, including those of non-invasive medical devices and food preparation areas. Quick and easy to use, the Tristel Sporicidal surface wipe uses chlorine dioxide to provide high-level disinfection against all microorganisms (spores, mycobacteria, viruses, fungi, bacteria) in under a minute. Once activated, the wipe changes colour so the user knows it’s ready for use. For improved safety, microorganisms are killed on the wipe so they are not simply transferred to another surface during the decontamination process.

Rigid Acrylic Haz-Mat Powder Handling Enclosures

Solo, the flexible film Isolator manufacturer, has expanded their product offering by launching a range of rigid acrylic isolators and LEV enclosures. The product range, badged soloMAX, provides a low cost alternative to stainless steel LEV enclosures and isolators.

Solo claim their fine powder handling LEV enclosures will reduce operator exposure standards well below the 1.0µ/M³ level. The soloMAX isolators take exposure down to nanogram levels and are backed up by detailed SOP development and optional OH monitoring.

The LEV enclosures feature super silent variable speed fans that may be direct or remote mounted. Solo are offering two stage HEPA H14 panel filters – with safe change option on LEV enclosures and mini ‘push/push’ H14 HEPA on low flow isolation units. The ‘push/push’ system permits contaminated filters to be pushed through into the contaminated chamber where they can be over bagged and passed out via the Solo bag-out port system.

Solo have designed the soloMAX range with operator comfort and convenience in mind. LEV enclosures feature lift up access screens for occasional cleaning. The Isolator range feature ovoid glove ports that are designed to permit maximum arm movement. All the soloMAX products are suitable for operation with analytical balances and can be designed to incorporate drum lifter devices and other equipment interfaces.

The Tristel Sporicidal surface wipe system generates chlorine dioxide when the activator foam is applied to the wipe. An almost instant reaction generates a controlled level of chlorine dioxide in aqueous solution, which is contained within the wipe. The wipe changes from pink to white when the chemical reaction has taken place making it clear that the wipe is ready for use. Incorporated in the Tristel technology is a buffering system that stabilises the pH at close to that of the skin mantle and an inhibitor system that protects sensitive materials. Tristel Sporicidal surface wipes system can be used for the high-level disinfection of commodes, wheelchairs, mattresses, beds, near-patient areas and food preparation areas. Chlorine dioxide is a powerful oxidising agent and a well-documented, highly effective and safe biocide. Tristel’s patented chlorine dioxide chemistry can kill all organisms on a surface from which excess soil and organic matter have been removed, with a contact time of only 30 seconds. Biocidically, the Tristel Sporicidal surface wipe is far superior to a wipe that uses alcohol, a quaternary ammonium compound, a biguanide, chlorhexidine gluconate or any other chemistry. Tristel’s chlorine dioxide is completely and rapidly biodegradable.

Ergonomically Correct Environmentally Safe

With over 100,000 Biological Safety Cabinets located throughout the world, NuAire has added 3 models of their CellGard ES (Energy Saver) Class II, Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinets, NU-475, NU-477 and NU-480. Each cabinet is modelled after NuAire’s highly recognised LabGard series of Biological Safety Cabinets but features a 10 degree sloped sash. Built using Direct Current, Electronically Commutated Motor (DC-ECM) and providing distinct energy saving characteristics. The motor not only operates at a constant airflow, it increases electrical efficiency, extends High- Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter life, and operates at lower noise and vibration than its counterparts. NuAire also selects the correct forward- curved fan for each size cabinet. This process improves motor efficiency and lowers operational costs.

The TouchLink Electronic Airflow Control System is a self-contained micro-processor module control system which monitors and controls all cabinet functions, along with complete diagnostic functions. The CellGardES is ergonomically designed for user comfort and adjustability, eliminating awkward posture, staggered service valves on the sidewalls making them easily accessible, relieving arm, neck and shoulder strain, frameless polished edge windows offering greater visibility, better sight lines, reducing eye fatigue. Ergonomic Chair, Footrest, and Motorised Base Stands to raise or lower the work surface within an eight inch range to alleviate bodily strain and increase safety conditions for laboratory professionals. The 10 degree sloped, hinged window pane adds accessibility and complements cleaning procedures by opening an additional 30 degrees.

The CellGardES has an exclusive Auto Decontamination Cycle, Decon 101, the TouchLink system provides step-by-step instructions to aid in proper Decon techniques. Optional glass sidewalls increase visibility in educational settings.
