New Miniature HCE Pressure Sensors Offer Digital SPI Output Signals and High Accuracy

Sensortechnics’ (Germany) new HCE series offers precision pressure measurement from 10 mbar up to 10 bar. The HCE sensors perform digital signal conditioning to provide highly accurate digital and analog output signals. They comply with the SPI bus protocol and can directly communicate with microcontrollers and microprocessors. I2C bus, switching or custom specific outputs are available on request.

The HCE series utilises the latest ASIC technologies to achieve high total accuracies, with an excellent Total Error Band (TEB) better than ±0.5 %FSS, including all temperature effects. A 3 V supply voltage and special low power versions (optional) make these sensors ideal for battery powered portable device applications. Miniature SMT housings (DIP and SIL versions on request) with straight or barbed pressure ports allow for highly flexible OEM designs and space-saving PCB-mounting. For all HCE pressure sensors Sensortechnics can provide fast and flexible modifications based on custom specific requirements. Important features of the new HCE series are: Pressure measurement from 10 mbar up to 10 bar; Digital SPI bus and analog output; High total accuracies of up to ±0.5 %FSS (TEB); Miniature SMT and SIL housings

Typical applications of the new HCE pressure sensors include medical devices, instrumentation, environmental controls and HVAC.

Winlims Rental Helps Food Testing Contract Lab Reduce Turn-Around Times

QTS Analytical, of East Malling, Kent, a contract laboratory that measures pesticide residues in fruit, vegetables and other foodstuffs, has enhanced the organization’s contract lab oratory’s customer service by utilising QSI’s (UK) WinLims Rental solution for contract laboratories. The ‘out of the box’ LIMS rental solution has helped QTS Analytical to boost efficiency and improve accuracy of its laboratory information management procedures. QTS Analytical’s contract laboratory service, which is aimed at organizations throughout the fruit and vegetable supply chain - growers, wholesalers and retailers, tests for pesticides in a variety of areas including fresh produce, soils, water and environmental analysis. Potential QTS customers include any company importing or growing fruit and vegetables. The QTS laboratory has UKAS accreditation for its pesticide residue analysis, covering a wide range of pesticides in fruit, vegetables and tea leaves. The company also participates in the internationally recognised FAPAS proficiency scheme. Fast turn-around times are vital for most contract laboratories and QTS is no exception. Although the standard turn- around time for QTS is five days the company also offers an industry-leading 12 hour emergency turn-around on residue testing. To achieve such demanding turn- around targets, speed and accuracy of reporting are crucial factors that have been greatly improved with the advent of the WinLims Rental package. Before the QSI solution was introduced the largely manual reporting process was a

major bottleneck. At peak times, staff sometimes had to work unsocial hours to keep up, and the administrative load also introduced invoicing delays.

Multi N/C 2100 For TOC/TNb Analysis of Wastewater, Soil and Sediment

The entry-level multi N/C 2100 catalytic combustion analyser from Analytik Jena (Germany) is ideally suited to simultaneous TOC/TNb analyses of a wide range of effluent, wastewater, soil and sediment samples. Very high combustion temperatures, selective high-sensitivity detectors for carbon and nitrogen, a double furnace configuration and simple-to-use software allow liquid and solid samples and liquids containing particulates to be measured with ease.

High temperature catalytic combustion results in complete oxidation of

samples to CO2 or NO. CO2 is detected by non dispersive infrared (NDIR) and NO is detected by chemiluminescence (CLD) providing a TOC detection limit of 200 ppb and TNb detection limit of 100 ppb. TIC, TC, NPOC, POC measurements can also be made. The Multi N/C series meets the requirements of DIN-EN, USEPA, ASTM, FDA and USP standards. Combustion temperatures up to 850°

C ensure that even organic compounds

of high thermal stability are completely broken down. The versatile double furnace configuration can be oriented either for solid or liquid samples with easy switching between the two configurations. No additional solids module is required. For the most demanding solid samples, an optional High-Temperature Solids Combustion System is available with a furnace temperature up to 1,300°

C.

Liquid samples up to 500 µl are directly injected into a septum-free sluice with the aid of a microliter syringe without tubing or valves. This arrangement is particularly suitable for water samples containing particles. An optional xyz autosampler for up to 60 vials of 10 ml is also available. This allows each sample to be individually stirred which is also important for the analysis of samples containing particles.

The easy to use multiWin® control and analysis software not only offers

comprehensive automation of analysis, from selection of liquid and solid samples to the set up of calibration curves, but also conforms to FDA 21 CFR Part 11. Measured data is saved to a database compliant to relevant standards. Different user levels, electronic signatures and the audit trail are easily traceable and satisfy the requirements of CFR 21 Part 11.

QTS investigates a typical sample load of 500 samples per month. using in-house GC-MS and LC-MS procedures. The contract laboratory has five standard operating procedures (SOPs) that have been developed in house to cover the bulk of the work. The GC based systems routinely handle 200 determinands per sample while the LC systems service up to 80. Based on the WinLims Rental system QTS has recently set up a remote sample booking system via the company’s web site. The new remote facility gives QTS customers the option to directly feed sample data into the company’s WinLims system. QTS is also in the process of setting up the facility to automatically generate invoices using the WinLims system. “QSI’s WinLims Rental solution offered a cost effective way of obtaining a LIMS system that was capable of meeting our exacting requirements and also offered a wide range of additional capabilities that would meet our future needs,” said Gardner. “Even if you go and buy a WinLims it is still a significant cost up front. However, with the WinLims Rental system you can have a really good LIMS right now.”
