22 Portable / Field Testing Portable Spectrometer Ideal for Field Applications

The Jaz spectrometer from Ocean Optics (Netherlands) is a handheld, field-portable analytical instrument that combines low-power optical sensing and onboard computing power for custom applications ranging from chlorophyll analysis in leaves and plants to solar irradiance measurements and ozone monitoring.

Jaz is a family of stackable, modular and autonomous components that share common electronics and communications. This compact, monolithic system – a typical setup for field use is about 6 inches in height and weighs less than 2 lb. – comprises a miniature CCD-array spectrometer and a powerful microprocessor and onboard display with data logging capability, so that full spectra data can be acquired, processed and stored without the need for a PC. Ethernet and battery modules offer additional functionality for field use.

The Jaz Ethernet module has data storage capability via an SD card slot and allows users to connect to the Jaz unit via the Internet, making remote measurements possible and enabling the creation of networked sensing modules. For example, a community of Jaz users could map atmospheric ozone measurements around the world and share the data nearly instantaneously.

The Jaz Lithium-Ion battery module is rechargeable in the field via the solar cell or back in the lab using the Power over Ethernet connection (100 Mbps, IEEE 802.3-compliant 10/100 single-cable), the USB 2.0 port or an external power supply. The battery module also has a power-conserving sleep mode for long-term measurements and two additional SD card slots for storing data.

Also, the Jaz platform can be expanded to include light sources (VIS-NIR or LED) and additional spectrometer channels. Jaz can be connected to field-ready fibre optic accessories such as cosine corrected irradiance probes for solar irradiance measurements, optical fibres and probes for immersing in fluids or sampling of solid surfaces, and devices for adjusting the field of view of the sampling optic. Also available is the Jaz SpectroClip, a sampling device more measuring transmission and reflection of thin materials such as leaves and plants. A special holster makes the Jaz wearable, freeing your hands to manipulate sampling devices.

Because of its size and versatility, Jaz is a convenient analytical tool for applications across various industries and disciplines, including horticultural and ecological sciences; biotechnology; solar analysis and environmental monitoring; marine sciences and geological research; surface waters analysis and pollution monitoring such as site remediation and fence line monitoring; and health and safety.

A nuclear power station in Washington, USA, recently purchased a portable hydrogen analyser from H2scan (USA) for the detection of hydrogen during a cask storage welding process. The analyser is able to provide immediate indication of any hydrogen leak and as such represents a vital component of the plant’s safety strategy.

The analyser, a HY-ALERTA 500 is highly sensitive to hydrogen and provides an almost instantaneous warning of any hydrogen leak with a unique visual LED array on the sensor probe. Readings are taken every 10 minutes for the duration of the lid to shell welding process, which typically takes 14 hours.

As a result of a recent procedural change, nuclear facilities are required to purge with an inert gas during welding operations and argon is used during the cask welding process. Importantly, the HY-ALERTA 500 is unaffected by argon; it does not require oxygen to operate and is able to function correctly in a wide variety of environmental conditions.

With two sensing elements on the same semiconductor die, the HY-ALERTA 500 can detect hydrogen leaks as low as 15 ppm and will not saturate or be destroyed when detecting high concentrations of hydrogen up to 100%. The solid-state sensor does not incorporate any consumables or moving parts and provides a 10 year expected lifespan.

Explaining the advantages of being able to monitor for hydrogen without oxygen, the power station supervisor of reactor maintenance, said “H2scan’s HY-ALERTA 500 was very reliable, easy to use, and improved our cask welding process. Without this instrument it would not be possible to detect a hydrogen build up during the cask welding process. A flash or burn-through is not only dangerous; it would cause a stoppage of the entire facility.

“Implementing H2scan’s analyser allowed operators to closely monitor the hydrogen concentration in real-time and halt the welding process if hydrogen was present.” Reader Reply Card No. Motorised Filter Wheel Extends Thermal Imaging Capabilities

The FLIR (France) X8000sc / X6000sc thermal imaging camera series contains a 4-slot motorised filter wheel with automatic filter recognition and measurement parameter adjustment. The removable filter holders also contain an integrated temperature probe for improved measurement accuracy.

Materials that are transparent or opaque to infrared (IR) wavelengths present problems in non-contact temperature measurements using a thermal imaging camera. With transparent materials, the camera sees through them and records a temperature that is a combination of the material itself and that which is behind it. In the case of when a thermal imaging camera needs to see through an opaque material to measure the temperature of an object behind it, signal attenuation and ambient reflections can make accurate temperature reading difficult or impossible. In some applications, an IR filter can be placed in the camera's optical path to overcome these problems.

With the FLIR X8000sc / X6000sc thermal imaging camera series the filter wheel enables application specific filters to be inserted between the lens and the focal plane. Each rotation of the filter position allows for a new spectral response to be measured and as a result of these calibrated filters - the FLIR X8000sc / X6000sc can be extended into application areas that other thermal imaging cameras may struggle with.

Further detailed information on how filters extend the measurement capabilities of thermal imaging cameras is contained in Chapter 4 of FLIR Systems 'The Ultimate Infrared Handbook for R&D Professionals' which may be downloaded.

Designed to provide ultra-sensitive and accurate measurements, ease of use and the most advanced connectivity in a compact, yet full featured thermal imaging camera - FLIR X8000sc / X6000sc thermal imaging camera series are ideal for scientists and R&D professionals working on the most demanding applications. Providing high-definition images of 1280 x 1024 pixels, FLIR X8000sc / X6000sc series thermal imaging cameras will reveal the faintest of thermal anomalies and allow you to see the smallest of details. Incorporating the most advanced detector technology - FLIR X8000sc / X6000sc series thermal imaging cameras can detect temperature differences smaller than 25mK (18mK typically). Using FLIR's proprietary "lock-in" facility is able to process temperature differences as small as 1mK can be made clearly visible. Designed to unlock the secrets of almost any application a FLIR X8000sc / X6000sc series thermal imaging camera can measure temperatures up to 3,000º C with an accuracy of +/- 1ºC or +/- 1%.
