• Finally and most importantly the plant operator can ensure that smaller bagfilter type arrestment plant (which do not require a particulate CEM) are appropriately monitored and all plant leaks and deteriorations are rapidly and reliably monitored.


Filter leak CEMSs help minimise emissions from industrial plant by providing rapid indication of arrestment plant leak conditions and as such play an increasing role in the ‘monitoring toolbox’ available to regulators and plant operators. Monitoring standards (EN-15859) and approvals schemes (MCERTS) support these requirements and ensure instruments are ‘fit for purpose’ and have appropriate quality assurance features.


The Source Testing Association (STA) was established in 1995 and has


a corporate membership of over 200 companies from process operators, regulators, equipment suppliers and test laboratories. The STA is a non- profit making organisation.


STA officers sit on all the UK, European and International working groups responsible for stationary source sampling and had lot of responsibility in development of this standard.


The STA is committed to the advancement of the science and practice of emission monitoring and to develop and maintain a high quality of service to customers and has been involved with the standards development process since its inception.

New Innovative Zero Air Generator for Air Quality Monitoring Systems


Casella Monitor introduces a time and cost-saving original product to its range of ambient monitoring equipment. Its new, cartridge-based, ZeroGen zero air generator removes the need for zero calibration gas cylinders when performing calibration checks on ambient air gas analyser systems. The cartridges are designed to be easily replaced each year, saving considerable time and expense compared to the use of traditional zero calibration cylinders.

New Efficient Emissions Monitors for Combustion Processes


The New 340 Emissions Analyser from Testo (UK) with 4 sensors allows flexible measurement in industrial combustion applications. Increasing fuel costs and the drive for optimum efficiency are spotlighting the increasing need for monitoring combustion processes by means of emission measurements. Testo have introduced a 4-gas instrument, which will make accurate emissions measurements quicker and easier in the future.


The Testo 340 is designed for commissioning, service and maintenance work as well as monitoring measurements on: Gas and oil burners of any size; Stationary gas engines; Gas turbines and Thermal oxidiser.

The Testo 340 emissions analyser incorporates measuring range extension, used on the existing MCERTS accredited Testo 350 and also the Testo 335 analysers. This allows the user to carry out unrestricted measurements


even at high gas concentrations. The Testo 340 is fitted with an O2 measuring cell as standard. Three further gas sensors (e. g. CO, COlow, NO, NOlow, NO2 or SO2) can be individually configured at any time, providing the optimum configuration for the respective measurement task.


Reader Reply Card no 260 Michell Instruments Helps Preserve ‘Iconic’ Artwork


Michell Instruments (UK) has loaned two instru ments to the National Needlework Archive (NNA) to help preserve an iconic mural. Designed by Constance Howard for the Festival of Britain in 1951 ‘The Country Wife’ is considered to be one of the 20th Century’s most important textile works. However, after nearly 60 years, the mural is in urgent need of restoration work to ensure its survival.


Part of the preservation process involves storing the work in an anoxia bubble where levels of oxygen are maintained at 1% with a relative humidity of less than 50% at 23°C. In order to monitor this environment, the NNA is using two of Michell’s instruments: an XTP600 Oxygen Transmitter and a DM509 RH handheld device.


The XTP600 uses the highly stable thermo-paramagnetic sensing technology to measure levels of oxygen in gases.


With its high reliability and low maintenance requirements it is ideal for applications such as this where an instrument is needed to monitor conditions over a long period of time.


The DM509 is a versatile hand-held relative humidity and temperature transmitter. It is not only lightweight and portable, but also easy to operate. This is a vital feature for the NNA staff who want to focus on the restoration work rather than the instrumentation.


The restoration project on this and other textiles is planned to take several years to complete, with the instruments on loan from Michell helping to maintain the environmental conditions throughout.
