Anton Paar’s Solutions for the Petroleum Industry

With our broad portfolio of analyzing instruments – ranging from portable devices for use in hazardous environments to highly accurate lab instruments and inline equipment for real-time results – we help you analyze various parameters and perform essential tests in just a few minutes. No matter the challenge, we have a solution on hand.

Crude oil analysis

When it comes to optimizing the flow behavior of traded crude oil, you can conduct rheological tests and viscosity measurements in-house so you can fine-tune your product composition without an external partner’s help. From established lab analysis to online sensor instrumentation, we have a range of options for this environment.

Fuel analysis

We help you certify petroleum products for parameters like density, viscosity, distillation behavior, flash and fire point, rheological behavior,

oxidation stability, and cold flow properties according to relevant standards. We also have solutions that measure a final product’s mass to ensure profitable trading and fulfill regulations.

Lubricant analysis

New lube blends are needed to minimize environmental impact during production and use, which makes in-depth knowledge about the lube’s properties – like rheological and temperature behavior – essential. We have a range of instruments that you can use in this area (e.g., the SVM viscometer, which provides a 150 % higher throughput than manual glass capillary viscometers).

Bitumen and asphalt analysis

We can help you learn more about your asphalt and bitumen products and comply with international standards. Whether it is determining flammability, elasticity, and bitumen hardness,

optimizing bitumen emulsions and stability, performing viscosity and density analysis at different temperatures, or investigating stabilization effects of emulsifiers or additives, we have a solution that fits your needs.

Anton Paar’s Future-Proof Solutions for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Analysis

Measure Kinematic Viscosity of In-Service Oils with Anton Paar

Our new SVM 1001 kinematic viscometer, when combined with a magnetic particle trap (MPT), is your budget-friendly solution for quick and easy used-oil analysis. It delivers ASTM-compliant results, in both D7042 and D445, making it an excellent alternative to conventional glass capillary systems.

Speed and efficiency

With its short measuring time and high sample throughput of up to 37 samples per hour, the SVM quickly determines the oil’s condition of machinery to identify the right time for an oil exchange. You can avoid downtime caused by engine damage as well. You only need 1.5 mL of sample to conduct measurements, which makes the SVM the most economic and efficient solution on the market. Once you are done with a measurement, results are automatically calculated.

A wide temperature range

To address the shifts underway in the jet fuel industry, we have developed a portfolio of instruments designed for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) analysis.

SVM 3001 Cold Properties

You can conduct multiple parameter analyses in just one test run with the SVM 3001 Cold Properties. With it, measure: • Cloud point • Freeze point

• Kinematic viscosity

(ASTM D7042 and ASTM D445 bias-corrected) • Density (ASTM D4052) • Viscosity borderline temperature (temperature at 12 cSt) • Standard above freeze point (SFP) • Refractive index

(when combined with our Abbemat refractometers)

With these capabilities, SVM 3001 Cold Properties is perfectly suited for quality control and R&D in low-temperature applications. Since you can conduct all of these measurements on one instrument, you save time and bench space.

In addition, you can reach temperatures down to -20 °C without an external thermostat. Results comply with ASTM D7566, D1655, DEF STAN 91-091, and AFQRJOS, which means it is the ideal instrument for jet fuel certification.

Other Anton Paar instruments

We have two other instruments that are helpful in this context. You can also use our DMA density meters to determine the density of jet fuels at 15°C (in line with ASTM D4052). For determining the flashpoint according to ASTM D56, our automatic closed-cup flash point tester delivers highly accurate results, and the existing gum content of fuel according to ASTM D381 can be tested with the gum content tester. Our Diana distillation analyzer series automatically conducts high-precision, high-sample-throughput distillation range analysis for fuels at atmospheric pressure.

These are just a few of our solutions that will help you increase productivity and meet the jet fuel market’s requirements of today and tomorrow.

SVM 1001 covers a 0.3 mm²/s to 5 000 mm²/s range with one single cell, letting you test a variety of samples without any trial and error for finding the right capillary. It is designed to operate at one or (optionally) two predefined temperatures between 15 °C and 100 °C, which makes it ideal to analyze in-service oils at 40 °C and 100 °C.

Features for simplicity

The quick and highly accurate integrated Peltier temperature control removes the need for a thermostatting bath, bath liquid, bath cooler, or separated thermometer. Since the MPT is directly mounted on the instrument, you can efficiently remove ferromagnetic particles without needing any additional preparation or lab equipment.

Automated Measurements for Low-Temperature Viscosity of Lubricants

email:

One solution, all standards: Anton Paar’s rotational viscometer, ViscoQC 300, in combination with the powerful Peltier temperature device PTD 175, complies with the most important standards for conducting low-temperature viscosity measurements of lubricants (e.g., ASTM D2983/D8210/D5133/ D7110, DIN 51398). The air counter-cooled PTD 175 provides a temperature range from -45 °C to +175 °C and requires no extra circulator bath, therefore keeping maintenance efforts and their associated costs to a minimum. Operation is risk-free, since no cooling liquids like methanol are required.

Full compliance

In line with ASTM D2983 and D8210, you can run automated, low-temperature viscosity tests for ATF, hydraulic fluids, and gear oils down to -40 °C.

For ASTM D5133 and D7110, you can perform automated temperature scans to measure the apparent viscosity of fresh, sooted, or highly oxidized engine oils at low temperatures and automatically generate the critical gelation index to predict the low-temperature pumpability problems that can lead to engine failure.

Full automation

While automation reduces the hands-on time needed to prepare and run a viscosity test, it also improves test precision. Integrating all conditioning and testing processes in a self-contained unit eliminates the temperature fluctuation and result variability associated with sample transfer and disruption. In addition, you can conveniently operate the instrument with a 7-inch touchscreen – no PC is required.

A range of unique features make measurements easier than ever and can prevent user errors. Toolmaster™ automatically recognizes the attached spindle type. Magnetic coupling facilitates easy and gentle-on-the-instrument attachment or removal of the spindle. Integrated digital leveling and constant monitoring of correct leveling status guarantee repeatable results. Moreover, T-Ready™ signals when the sample has reached the desired temperature.
