Wireless Gas Detector Sales to be Boosted with New Distribution Agreement

Masatoshi Nakahara, director and senior vice president of Yokogawa’s Industrial Automation Platform Busi- ness Headquarters with GasSecure’s CEO, Knut Sandven

GasSecure (Norway) AS announces the signing of an agreement with Yokogawa Electric Corporation on the distribution of GasSecure’s ISA100 Wireless* based gas detectors through Yokogawa’s global sales network. With this agreement, Yokogawa gains access to GasSecure’s wireless gas detectors and thereby strengthens its lineup of plant fi eld wireless solutions and enhances its support of health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) management applications. This agreement will also allow GasSecure to

gain access to Yokogawa’s global sales and service network and thereby boost the sales of its wireless gas detectors.

With a fi eld wireless system, the fi eld devices at a plant are able to communicate wirelessly with host systems that perform functions such as monitoring and control. Wireless communications offer many advantages, including the ability to install fi eld devices in diffi cult-to-wire locations and reduced cabling costs.

GasSecure specialises in the development, manufacture, and sale of low power, high reliability wireless gas detectors that are used to monitor for hydrocarbon leaks at offshore platforms, tank farms, industrial plants, and the like. GasSecure’s clients include major oil companies and the products are in wide use around the globe. Yokogawa has been developing a wide variety of ISA100 Wireless compliant technologies and devices such as wireless adapters that allow conventional wired devices to access wireless networks.

The growing need to improve plant safety by installing more gas detectors and replacing out of date detection systems is driving the demand for wireless gas detectors, which have the added advantage of eliminating the need for wiring and thus are easier to install and cost less. Under this agreement, GasSecure will be able to utilize Yokogawa’s global sales and service network to expand its wireless gas detector business. At the same time, Yokogawa will be better able to satisfy its customers’ needs by incorporating GasSecure’s ISA100 Wireless gas detectors in its fi eld wireless system solutions.

Also, under the terms of a separate sales agreement that was reached in February of this year, GasSecure will sell Yokogawa’s fi eld wireless system devices together with its own gas detection systems.

Spectris plc. (USA), the productivity-enhancing instrumentation and controls company, today announces that it has acquired the business and assets of the Canadian company La Corporation Scientifi que Claisse Inc. (‘Claisse’), a global market leader in sample preparation for atomic spectroscopy (including X-ray) analysis, for an undisclosed sum. Revenues for the year ending March 2014 were CAD 13 million.

Claisse designs, manufactures and sells consumables and instruments used to prepare consistent and comparable samples for spectroscopic analysis in mining, pharmaceutical, academic research and industrial applications. Claisse will become part of the Materials Analysis segment and will be integrated into PANalytical, combining two leaders in fusion and X-ray fl uorescence (XRF) analysis.

Eoghan O’Lionaird, Spectris Business Group Director, said: “Claisse is a strong strategic addition to Spectris’ Materials Analysis segment as it deepens our presence within the sample preparation market. Claisse is renowned for its innovation and fusion technology leadership, and we are confi dent that the market will benefi t from PANalytical’s support of Claisse’s continued

product and application development plans. We believe there is a strong cultural fi t with PANalytical, and that the combined capabilities will create signifi cant value for our XRF customers, as well as increasing PANalytical’s resilient revenues.”

Oil Analysis Programme for US Army, Navy and Air Force earns Innovation Award

Spectro Scientifi c (USA), a developer and manufacturer of analytical tools and software for fl uid and machine condition monitoring, has earned a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II award totaling $750,000 for its work in reevaluating the Joint Oil Analysis Program (JOAP) that consolidates and coordinates the oil analysis programs of the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force. The U.S. Small Business Administration makes the SBIR award to promote high-tech innovation in the fulfi llment of specifi c research and development needs. The contract awarded to Spectro Scientifi c for Phase II efforts extends into calendar year 2016.

Spectro Scientifi c undertook the reevaluation effort with the aim of improving the JOAP by modifying processes and/or equipment to create more effective oil analysis. The JOAP was formed following the mid-1950s U.S. Bureau of Naval Weapons research into oil analysis as a tool to indicate and predict wear of machine components. The program has resulted in great improvements in equipment and engine life as well as maintenance effi ciency, with signifi cant positive effect on operational readiness and economy of the military.

Based on its worldwide expertise in comprehensive, immediate analysis of in-service lubricants, Spectro Scientifi c proposed a three-phase approach to improving JOAP. The

proposals include developing advanced oil analysis methods including frequency and type of sampling; creating prototype equipment for collection and analysis; and expanding the program to include a multitude of Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force engines and other equipment, in addition to exploring commercial applications such as commercial aircraft and large scale marine engines.

Spectro Scientifi c president and CEO Brian Mitchell said, “Spectro Scientifi c has proposed new processes and technology that can be easily deployed in the fi eld to give military maintenance personnel critical information without waiting for samples to be sent to a laboratory. Spectro Scientifi c has worked closely with the JOAP organisation for over twenty years and we are grateful for this SBIR award. We are even more gratifi ed to be able to support the readiness and effi ciency of our nation’s military efforts.”
