5th International Conference on Polyolefi n Characterisation (ICPC) to be Held in Spain


Intended for researchers working on polyolefi n characterisation in the industry and academia, ICPC is organised every two years by Polymer Char (Spain) in three different locations: Texas, USA, Valencia, Spain, and Shanghai, China. Previous editions have had an attendance of professionals from up to 24 countries, all belonging to leading polyolefi n players and placing ICPC as the meeting point par excellence for polyolefi n experts.

This year, the Technical Program will consist of oral and poster sessions covering Separation and Fractionation, Molecular Structure and Properties, Morphology, Rheology and Spectroscopy. As part of the conference program, a Short Course on Polyolefi n Characterisation Techniques is scheduled on September 21st at the same venue. This one-day intensive course is an ideal way to learn the main concepts about Polyolefi n Microstructure, GPC Basics, Applications, Practical Considerations, and Calculations, Chemical Composition Distribution techniques (TREF, CRYSTAF, CEF, and CFC), High Temperature HPLC and Preparative Fractionation. The sessions will be presented by some of the most distinguished experts in the fi eld. A full agenda of the short course is available on the website. The conference will be accompanied by Booth areas and Vendor speeches.


ICPC’s technical committee is formed Dr. Benjamin Monrabal (Polymer Char, Spain), Dr. Colin Li Pi Shan (The Dow Chemical Company, USA) and Prof João Soares (University of Alberta, Canada), Prof Minoru Terano (JAIST, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Japan) and Prof Dujin Wang (ICCAS, Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China).

The vapour pressure of crude oil is an important parameter for storage and transportation. The vapour pressure depends on the available headspace above the liquid as well as on the temperature. The smaller the headspace volume and the higher the temperature of the crude the higher its vapour pressure gets. To ensure safe transportation of crude oil in a pipeline, which typically occurs at very low vapour to liquid ratios, the pressure of the pipeline has to adjusted according to the vapour pressure of the crude at a given transportation temperature to prevent vapour locks. If the necessary pressure exceeds the pressure limit of the pipeline the crude oil has to be degasifi ed prior to transportation. Another important question that can be answered by measuring the vapour pressure of crude oils is the maximum temperature at which the crude oil can be safely transported or stored.


Because of the seriousness of this topic, the US Department of Transportation issued an Emergency Restriction/Prohibition Order in February 2014 to all persons who offer for transportation, or transport, in tank cars by rail in commerce to, from and within the United States, a bulk quantity of Petroleum crude oil.


To be able to predict the behavior of a certain crude oil it is therefore absolutely necessary to measure its vapour pressure at different V/L ratios and at different temperatures. A very versatile ASTM standard that allows such variable conditions to be used is ASTM D6377. In May 2013 the EPA acknowledged this method as a broadly applicable alternative for the determination of the true vapour pressure of crude oil under title 40 CFR.
