10 Safety ATEX Approved Variants of DC Circuit Breakers for Chemical, Oil and Gas Industries

Scattergood & Johnson, renowned in the electrical engineering distribution industry for high levels of stock, service, technical support and customer satisfaction, now stocks DC electronic overcurrent protection products for automation applications from E-T-A Circuit Breakers (Germany).

According to Robert Hargreaves, Managing Director of Scattergood & Johnson: “E-T-A is a quality designer and manufacturer of electronic products for DC circuit protection in industrial applications. The company’s ESX10 family of electronic overcurrent protection products have proved themselves in a number of UK companies by reducing costly downtime and reducing danger to personnel in automation applications: some versions have ATEX approval for Ex zone 2, making them particularly useful for applications in the chemical, petroleum and gas industries.”

Albert Pipe, General Manager of E-T-A Circuit Breakers, added: “Scattergood & Johnson are well respected as a key distributor of plant and machine safety products to heavy industry and we are delighted that their customers will have ready access to stock of our ESX10 family which offers variants for plug-in to rail mounted modules or for direct rail mounting. These provide the best possible protection for loads, such as controls, sensors, transformers and solenoid valves, which are fed by switch-mode power supplies or battery-buffered power supplies.”

E-T-A circuit protectors prevent costly downtime and speed fault diagnosis. If a piece of plant equipment becomes faulty, the E-T-A circuit protector trips and isolates that specifi c piece of equipment, allowing the rest of the plant to continue operating normally. For processes powered by 24V DC switch-mode power supplies without circuits protected by a device such as the ESX10, an overload in a single circuit will cause the power supply to shut down the output to all the circuits it supplies. ESX10 options include remote reset and status indication.

New Condition Monitoring Sensor Suitable for Hazardous Environments

SKF (UK) has launched the SKF Wireless Machine Condition Sensor, which uses the WirelessHart communication protocol and provides dynamic vibration and temperature data for condition monitoring and machinery diagnostic applications. The product has ATEX Zone 0 certifi cation, which means that it can also be used in hazardous environments, for example those found in petrochemical, oil and gas, or pharmaceutical plants. The SKF Wireless Machine Condition Sensor combines both sensor and router node into one compact and battery-operated unit the size of a typical industrial accelerometer.

SKF Wireless Machine Condition Sensors communicate with each other, and with a wireless gateway, creating a mesh network. This type of network and communication protocol is ideal for monitoring rotating machinery throughout large plants, in hard to reach locations, or in areas where traditional WiFi communications will not work.

“The new SKF Wireless Machine Condition Sensor offers monitoring capabilities that may be impossible with wired systems or hand-held devices. This can ultimately lead to reduced condition monitoring costs as well as to a safer approach to machine monitoring,” says Jan Hendrik van der Linden, Product Line Manager, SKF.

With the new product, users can benefi t from an improved maintenance program, reduced maintenance costs, reduced installation costs, enhanced employee and machine safety, and compatibility with the established SKF @ptitude Analyst software suite.

The SKF Wireless Machine Condition Sensor operates in a low power consumption mode, allowing the battery to last for years in the fi eld. Communication capabilities include relaying data from one node to another, relaying data back to the gateway, and receiving automated commands from the Wireless Sensor Device Manager software that initiate the measurement and processing circuits to take data and transmit it back over the network. If a node is unable to receive signals directly from the WirelessHART gateway, it will instead send and receive its data through a nearby node that can pass the data to and from the gateway – ultimately creating the mesh network.

Once data is collected, the WirelessHART gateway communicates with the Wireless Sensor Device Manager software supplied by SKF. Device Manager then automatically exports the data into SKF @ptitude Analyst, a comprehensive diagnostic and analytic software package, where a plant engineer can analyse the data and determine a course of action.

Latest Capability Extension to Gas Detector Announced

Crowcon (UK), the gas detection specialist, today announces the release of the latest IRmax capability extension, enabling the detection of 29 hydrocarbon gases or vapours. As a key component of Crowcon’s Fire & Gas Safety portfolio, the infrared gas detector can now be calibrated for more obscure gases or vapours like toluene, cyclohexane, isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and paraxylene, along with the more common hydrocarbons such as methane, ethanol and LPG.

The IRmax is an ultra-compact infrared (IR) gas detector which delivers rapid, fail-safe detection of hydrocarbon gases with very low power consumption. Far smaller and lighter than comparable IR detectors, the IRmax is easy to install in even the most inaccessible locations.

Conventional IR gas detectors use power consuming heaters to prevent condensation on windows and mirrors. Not so the IRmax. Instead, its optical

components are treated with the highly durable, hydrophobic coating STAY-CLIR that completely prevents signal faults due to condensation. Because the IRmax contains no optical surface heating components, power consumption is dramatically reduced. It requires less than 1 Watt of power, typically 75-90% lower than other IR gas detectors. A gas detection system using IRmax detectors therefore requires smaller, lower cost power supplies and battery back-up systems. Longer cables can also be used and more detectors can be powered on addressable networks.

Featuring dual-wavelength IR sensor technology in a rugged 316 stainless steel package, the ultra-compact IRmax provides rapid, fail-safe detection of potentially explosive hydrocarbons under the most extreme conditions. Capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -40 to +75oC, Crowcon’s IRmax units are used in some of the most extreme climates on earth, ranging from the Siberian tundra to the Arabian desert and from the North Sea to the Niger Delta.

Other features of IRmax include: Options for HART and RS-485 Modbus communications, IEC61508 SIL 2 Sira, ATEX, IECEx, Inmetro, gas and dust zone certifi cations, Hand-held Intrinsically Safe calibrator, and automatic optical obscuration monitoring.

This latest development to IRmax makes it a key component in the complete Crowcon Fire & Gas offering, ensuring every safety aspect is covered. 31309pr@reply-direct.com

The IRNET is the base of the new family of infrared sensors developed by N.E.T. Srl (Italy), featuring integrated electronics with microprocessor for signal linearisation and temperature compensation, and it is suited for instrument manufacturers with no specialist knowledge of IR technology.

Using the patented optical cavity “Nautilus”, combined with the latest NDIR technology, the result is a high performing, robust sensor for Hydrocarbon or Carbon Dioxide with a lifetime of over 5 years meant for detection in ppm range, % LEL or % volume.

The wide operating temperature (-40 °C to +60 °C) and humidity range, 20mm or 32mm diameter size, standard output (voltage or pellistor replacement), fast response time and ModBus digital communication make it suitable for fi xed gas detection instruments.
