News 3 Sports coaching opportunities for young people
YOUNG people can get help to chase their sporting dreams. Glasgow Sport wants to
train up youngsters looking for a career in sports coaching. The programme – called Coach Core – will help young people aged 16-21 with coaching skills in sports including football, swimming
and basketball. It’s supported by the Wheatley Pledge, a scheme set up by Wheatley Group to encourage contractors and suppliers to do more for people in our communities. The full-time course will see the young people mentored and trained in sports coaching for a year.
Coach Core is looking for another 20 young people to start in August. If you’re aged 16-21 and
are unemployed, it could be for you. You don’t need any qualifications or experience to apply.

Weekly walking football sessions
TENANTS can now walk the walk outdoors as well as indoors.
Our partners in Wheatley
Group, Loretto Care, have organised twice-weekly walking football sessions. The slower-paced game
reduces the risk of injury and is great for young, old, big or small. Sessions now take place outdoors at Dennis Donnelly Park, Corkerhill Place, on Mondays from 1-3pm, and indoors at the YMCA in Tollcross Road on Thursdays from 1-3pm. For more details, phone Louise on 274 8664.
Championship
Foundation sets the stage A
NEW project will give young people their first experience of the theatre. Wheatley Foundation, a charitable
trust set up by GHA’s parent organisation Wheatley Group, has joined forces with the National Theatre of Scotland on their First Nights programme. It will see 200 young people living in Wheatley homes given a ticket to a National Theatre of Scotland show, a chance to meet the actors and creative team from the production and a behind the scenes tour of the National Theatre of Scotland’s new facility. They will also be given a theatre workshop and have the cost of their travel and refreshments paid for. The First Nights project will remove the financial barriers that young people in our
communities often face in accessing live theatre, broaden their horizons, and help them discover new skills and talents. Jean Albert Nietcho, Wheatley Foundation Board member and GHA tenant, said: “First Nights will allow many children to experience the magic of live theatre for the very first time. “The Wheatley Foundation was set up
to create opportunities and help people achieve their ambitions. “First Nights is an exciting way to do just that, and we hope it fosters a life-long love of the arts in the young people who take part.” If you know any youth organisations who’d be interested in taking part, email wheatley.
