JOURNEY ROUND THE WORLD INSPIRING GARDENS
When Stephen and Paula Morgan bought their stunning period Bromyard home in 2004 the large gardens were laid mainly to lawn with little horticultural interest. Most of the mature trees that had originally been part of the garden had been felled to make way for the previous owner’s mini golf course.
Fortunately Stephen was not only a keen gardener but also the director of a garden centre chain and soon began transforming the three acre plot. Trained in horticulture, through his work he had previously worked on a number of gold medal large gardens at the Chelsea and Hampton Court shows so knows a thing or two when it comes to gardening and was unfazed by the scale of the task in front of him.
Rather than a traditional country garden with borders and flower beds, the couple decided to let their imaginations run wild and incorporate a variety of styles and themes, with magic, mystery and a dash of theatre all thrown in.
“I was still working at the time but we spent many long weekends and evenings working on it,” Stephen said.
“We didn’t have an overall vision or plan for the garden, it just kept evolving. We love lots of different styles of plants so it seemed fun to incorporate them into all different styles of garden rooms within a garden.”
It was clearly a real labour of love and it didn’t take long for friends and family to start suggesting they open their garden for others to see and enjoy. Since they opened to the public seven years ago, thousands have visitors have enjoyed the results of their efforts.
