'STYLE FOR’ AUGUST BATHING BEAUTIES

A

As we hit August, this month we take a look at the daring two piece - the bikini. When the bikini first hit the market in 1946, few know that the swimsuit was considered so scandalous that the Vatican declared the garment to be sinful. But shortly after, thanks in part to the influence of Hollywood, the bikini rapidly ascended in popularity. It was when Brigitte Bardot first appeared at Cannes Film Festival in a floral two-piece that it took flight. And once Bardot made it acceptable to wear a bikini (thanks Brigitte, we salute you), then celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Esther Williams quickly followed suit and now we cannot be without it.

Since then, the most expensive bikini in the world was created specifically for Sports Illustrated. The two-piece is made of over 150 carats of flawless diamonds set in platinum and it is valued at more than $30 million. If you don't have $30 million lying around, you can use these much more affordable ones that still cut it.

We take a gorgeous glance at the various vibes seen at this year’s fashion stores. Each one selected brings its own unique style and sassiness – bikinis to brag about. All are available to view online at John Lewis.

Opening with the Raquel bikini from Reiss, it’s the kind of set that you'll have on rotation all season long. The bottoms are cut to a mid-rise and meeting with slim sides at the hips, it's a truly understated design with a detailed twist. Wear with the coordinating top or mix and match styles for a more eclectic look. The Raquel triangle style bikini top is designed with fixed padding that creates a sculptural silhouette. This turquoise shade works with any tone of skin, perfect for those holiday sunbathing sessions where your paler skin may need a little distraction.

Nothing is as admirable as a stunning nude bikini to show style and subtlety. Mango lends a pretty update to your staple bikini bottoms with scallop edges along the waist and leg line. Soft and stretchy with an inner lining, they're a great base for mixing and matching with your favourite kaftans.

Pretty in pink, this soft feminine look is both fun, flirty as well as vibrant. The Annabella bikini from Reiss is designed with pleat and knot detailing, offering a chic alternative to printed alternatives. Wear the top with the coordinating briefs or mix and match styles for a more eclectic look.

Made from a soft, lightweight and quick-drying fabric, this next bikini top from White Stuff offerings, (pictured left and main illustration opposite) versatile wear with a detachable halter strap. Designed with a drawstring tie at the front you can easily adjust to suit your bust shape, it's given a playful accent with a colour pop tassel trim. Complete your set with the matching bottoms.
