HA R R I SON CL A R K R ICKE R BY S BETTER TOGETHER THAN ON OPPOSITE SIDES
Their emphasis is on personal care for each of their clients, because they know many people are very vulnerable at the end of a relationship. Carolyn said: “It’s important to balance the support and care we give with maintaining a professional relationship – we’re not their parent, we’re their legal advisor. Having said that, we will do all we can to help them through a very difficult time.
“For us, this starts with a realistic overview of the situation right from the start – no-one wants to get six months down the line and find that there is something major that hadn’t been raised before.”
Is it ironic that two divorce lawyers, who have been on opposing sides for more than 20 years, are now working together in harmony?

Carolyn Green and James Grigg now form one of the most formidable divorce teams in the region, according to a client talking to the Legal 500 directory of top lawyers – they said: “They have cornered the market, so they appear in all the big cases and …they have all the best practitioners in the area…it is their ability to get on with clients and gain their confidence which sets them apart.”
But the two were at different firms for a long time, each representing one half of the same couple on occasion – you might imagine that this would make working together now harder, but far from it.
Carolyn said: “There is a real value in having someone who you respect on the other side; you know that you can reach sensible conclusions which help both parties. No one involved, especially the clients, wants a case to go longer than it needs to, and we want a fair and reasonable conclusion; if your opponent understands that, the whole process is much smoother for the clients.”
“Working collaboratively is often the way forward,” James added. “In that way, the clients get the outcome they need, and we avoid a situation where one lawyer tells their client they have a great case, only to have it demolished at the final hearing.”
Carolyn and James are part of one of the largest family law teams – 60-strong across the country - and they represent clients in cases involving some of the largest international firms as well as those involving very local single-lawyer practices.
Even though no-fault divorce is set to become law, neither believes this will affect their work – James said: “It is a good move, and one which has been a long time coming, but it won’t change life for us very much; we use different approaches to resolve issues, including arbitration. Whatever produces the best outcome for our clients, fairly and reasonably – that is our focus.”
