HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? CHOOSE YOUR PLANTS WISELY

Having worked for years as a designer in the luxury home building market, Sara Edwards decided to combine her design experience with her passion for plants into a garden design business. To launch No.30 Design Studio, she designed and built a show garden at RHS Malvern Spring Festival and was awarded a coveted Gold Medal and ‘Best in Category’. Sara now works with discerning clientele throughout the borders and West Midlands to bring their dream gardens to life.

When I was taught planting design, I was told to take my long list of plants, half it and double the quantities of the remaining list….and then repeat.

Each plant on the final list must have to work hard, by either having good structure or a long season of interest and be planting harmoniously as specimens or in groups of three or five or larger drifts. And this is what I practise when I plan a planting plan for clients, I design the planting to be harmonious, consistent, and reliable.

However, as gardeners we can be planners or impulsive, patient or needing instant gratification and have varying habits when it comes to planting our gardens. For example, some may redo a border and buy all the plants on the same trip to the garden centre, whilst others may revisit it every month or so and buy what looks good then and consider how it will work with the rest of the planting in the scheme. The impulsive might buy one of a plant which is looking fabulous on display, but may only flower for a couple of weeks, resulting in a border with lots of individual single plants dotted along it bought at different times, none of which have a long season of interest. The planners might be prepared to give their garden time to mature and grow, perusing bulb and seed catalogues and planning next year’s scheme, as this year’s is only just starting to fade?
