July 12, 2021

Calgary – It was a day to re- member for Zeph Lariviere, the Saskatchewan handler and driver for Johnson’s Belgians, as he cleaned up on the final day of Heavy Horse events. Winning Best in Show, the team was also named World Champions in the prestigious Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse World Champion Six Horse Hitch competition. This is Lariviere’s

fourth time competing in the World Champion Six Horse Hitch and the first time cir- cling the ring as a World Champion. “The key to our suc-

cess today is everyone working hard every day to make sure we were prepared and to make sure that we had a good steady drive,” he humbly credited. Gayle Gerein, owner of

Johnson Belgians of Unity, SK, couldn’t be more thrilled with the $10,000 win on Sunday afternoon. “It’s always been a

dream of mine to own and show Belgians and when I saw Zeph show several

and we finally did it. It’s an awesome feeling. We have an awesome driver, and the horses are awesome and I’m so proud of everybody,” ex- claimed Gerein. Visit ag.calgarystam- pede.com/results for full re- sults from the World Six and the Heavy Horse Show.

years ago, I phoned him up and we started showing at the Calgary Stampede four years ago.” The majestic heavy

horses have been showing in Calgary even before the in- ception of the Greatest Out- door Show on Earth in 1886. Not only is it the longest running agricultural compe- tition at the Stampede, it is also the oldest heavy horse show in North America. Pulling immaculately

styled freight wagons, these impressive horses weighing around one-ton apiece strut- ted their stuff to a cheering audience at the Nutrien Western Events Centre on Sunday. “This is the first year

with this six. We have sev-

eral youngsters, and they did us proud. A shout-out to the horses whose names are Duke, Angie, Ricky-Bud, Seth, Diamond and Laney for their performance today,” gushed Gerein. Lariviere added, “I’ve

been coming here since I was 13 years old, and I started with one horse and here I am today showing a six-horse hitch. It’s pretty cool.”

Making the afternoon

even more memorable for this team was the announce- ment that Ava Ruthven, also associated with Johnson Belgians, won the Youth Aggregate Award. “Oh my gosh, it’s all so

exciting. All I wanted was to win to the “six” in Calgary

Outstanding Teamster Takes Heavy Weight Championship; 13-year-old Teamster Makes His Stampede Debut

July 16, 2021 It was an afternoon of

celebrating experience and welcoming the next genera- tion of teamsters. N i p a w i n ,

Saskatchewan’s teamster Ken Schreiner and his horses Doc and Bob hooked their way to a big win at the 2021 Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Pull in the Heavy Weight Division on Thursday. With a 11,000 lbs full pull, they edged out Merle Gallant who capped off with an 86 1/4” pull at 11,000 lbs. Schreiner has been

pulling horses for 10 years and uses his team for vari- ous farming duties like feed- ing cows, hauling bales and wood, and sleigh and wagon rides.

“The team has turned

into a very quiet, well-man- nered team with great pa- tience.” Doc is a 10-year-old Belgian, as is his partner Bob, with a combined weight of 4,718 lbs. Not only did Schreiner

win the Heavy Weight Championship, but he was also presented the Outstand- ing Teamster Award, as voted by his peers. In the Stampede’s

Heavy Horse Pull, teams in three weight classes pull weighted sleds — up to more than five times the horse’s body weight — up to 14 feet, known as a “full pull.” The Grand Champion in each class receives $3,000; the Reserve Cham- pion $2,500, with a sliding scale of payouts for the rest of the field. There were five teams

competing in the Heavy Weight Division that took place Thursday in the West- ern Nutrien Event Centre. The full competition with classes for Light, Middle and Heavy Weights were spread over three days. A highlight of the

Heavy Weight Division was the debut of the youngest teamster to ever compete - thirteen-year-old teamster Johnny Luster with horses Tom and Stormy. “They are pretty good

horses. They are both older

than I am, so hopefully they know more than me.” Lus- ter finished fifth in the com- petition with a 76’ pull at 10,000 lbs weight. On Wednesday, Dennis

Weinberger and horses LD and Rusty were awarded Grand Champion in the Middle Weight Division with a full pull at the 12,050 lbs weight. This team of Belgian horses have a com- bined weight of 3,647 lbs. Weinberger has pulled for 26 years all over North America and set and broke three World Heavyweight records in the USA. On Tuesday, Ron Se-

bastian from Lumsden SK, and horses Tom and Digger took the Lightweight Divi- sion with a 156’ pull at the 10,000 lbs weight. For full results from
