rently in his 22nd year with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) . Wilkes is at the Bancroft OPP De- tachment which is located in North Hastings County. At the age of 17, Wilkes joined the mili-

wonderful world of Quarter Horses in 2020, when his daughter Dana de- cided to purchase her first horse, a 15 yr old Quarter Horse mare “Golden Sink Mint,” fondly known as Belle. Dana proudly tells the story of

how the entire family pitched in to help her with the dream of owning a horse. “My parents knew nothing about horses but were always very willing to learn and offer help when- ever needed, especially my father. My horse was purchased and then brought to us in a very short amount of time not allowing us enough time to find a hay dealer. My dad went out of his way to find one and every month, sometimes more often, he would take his truck, drive an hour get two hay bales

would make this trip twice just to en- sure we had to the hay we needed. He also drove me to our local co-op for grain and fly spray etc. whenever needed. Without my dad’s help and generosity I would not have been able

to purchase my horse.” Dana continues on to state,

“Throughout this whole pandemic and being a first time horse owner my parents have been so supportive and patient.” “This next school year I am headed off to the University of Guelph, which is 3 hours away from where my horse is currently boarded . This also would not be possible without my parents. They have agreed to work together to come out multiple times a week to not only check up on my horse but brush her and work with her. I am so grateful for the support system my family pro- vides and I would not be able to do anything without them.” CQHA honors Provincial Con-

pony that every girl dreams about. Marie and Mikey met by chance when a close friend bought him to be a companion for her horse at just 3(or 4) years of age. The connection and bond that quickly formed between Mikey and Marie was brought into fruition when her friend got out of horses, and Marie scrambled for every penny she had to purchase Mikey and keep him with her. Mikey quickly showed Marie how trust and true friendship can accomplish anything. They did every- thing from Dressage, jumping, trial riding, driving, games classes to cutting cows bigger than he was at 13.2hh. He then turned his talents to the winners circle, while still under Marie’s care. When things got serious in Marie’s life, she made sure to keep her prom- ise...Mikey would never be sold, and never want for anything. And so it was, on Marie’s wedding day, Mikey was included! First stop after the hospital was out to the barn to introduce Mikey to each son, first Austin, later Zachary. Mikey was a big part of the family and mascot to the home farm. After his surgery in March of 2010, he retired to a life of leisure around the farm. Still treated like the

Ontario on the family farm known as Lazee G Ranch. Hanna has 2 children her daughter Lexi shares her mother’s love of horses. Since the age of 3 Hanna has been riding, training, per- forming and competing with her horses. She volunteers her time with equine youth programs at Lazee G Ranch coaching the Silver Stars and Rising Stars Drill Teams. Hanna’s drill teams have performed for Mason’s Fight for Cancer and Bethany’s Hope just to mention a few. Lazee G Ranch

missed the many wonderful riding programs over the past year and half due to Covid restrictions . Colenutt recognizes the importance of students interacting with their equine friends; data has proven interaction with horses builds confidence, reduces stress and maintains physical activity for a healthy lifestyle. Under the cur- rent circumstances Hanna hopes that life can get back to normal where people can enjoy the outdoors, ride their horses, feel free, and be happy and content. Unless you are a rider or someone who spends hundreds of hours working with horses you may find it difficult to understand the im- portance that horses have brought to thousands of lives.
