Parish plans ‘not decided’
AN UNDER-FIRE parish council has come out fighting over plans to move allotments in favour of tennis courts. Bearsted Parish Council (BPC)
says "shared" information on its pro- posed acquisition of land near Holy Cross Church is unfounded. Allotment holders are angry they
were not consulted before an an- nouncement about the land. Under the terms of the transfer, the proposal, which is under con- sultation, would see the church car park expanded, 29 plot holders moved to 48 new allotment sites and the tennis club given two extra courts. One of the conditions of the land from owners Richard and Dina Ashness is that the tennis club is al- lowed more land.
Cllr Denis Spooner wrote to the
clerk maintaining there was no "pro- cedural or legal reason" for not hav- ing community engagement prior to
acquisition. Public consultation will carry on until August and the parish council has published online state- ments to debunk rumours and al- leged inaccurate claims. Cllr Spooner accused BPC of pub- lishing material about the land which appeared to be "determinis- tic" in stating "what is going to hap- pen" within a budget. About £100,000 has been set aside to de- velop the site. Clerk Erin Sugden responded to
Cllr Spooner's letter explaining: "We are only at the outline stage, no final decision has been made by the full council. The working group identi- fied areas that need improvement which included a larger car park. "The transfer of land was based on Mr and Mrs Ashness’ request that the tennis club are (sic) given access to more land and that tennis courts are developed within three years.” Comment, page 45
Digger theft appeal
DO you know these men? Investi- gators have issued CCTV images of three men they would like to speak to, who may have important information about a theft. A Samsung digger was reported
stolen from a compound in Church Road, Tovil, on March 13. Officers recovered it on June 7
at an address in Iwade and a 38- year-old man was arrested on sus- picion of theft. He was later
released pending further investi- gation. Anybody who recognises the
men is urged to contact Kent Po- lice on 01622 604100, quoting crime reference number 46/42622/21. You can also call the indepen-
dent charity Crimestoppers anony- mously on 0800 555111 or complete an online form on their website.
