Spotlight on Bearsted

downsmail.co.uk A village of bards and scholars!

THERE are few places left in Kent so quintessentially English than the compact, chocolate box village of Bearsted, just off the A20. It is a place which can quite literally boast bards and scholars, eminent sportspeople, actors and comics among its dwellers, past and present. It is said that it derives its name

from the Anglo-Saxon “Bergestede”, translating as “place on the hill/barrow” but historians guess the original ‘place’ may refer to a previously revered holy site elsewhere.

Up until the 1600s, The Green was known as the Hothe which was common land used by animals for free grazing. Today it is used for relaxation and cricket. Recently, The Green’s summer

serenity has been enhanced by the sound of bells at Holy Cross Church, allowed to peal after the lifting of COVD-19 rules. Sure, Bearsted has changed over the years. The parish now has around 8,000 residents, envelopes Madginford and nudges on the

neighbouring areas Thurham, Weavering and Otham. It is immensely proud its cobble-close community reputation, rich in sports clubs, Women’s Institutes, civic societies, churches and youth activities.

House prices largely hold steady in bad times and surge in the good, so sought-after property ownership is an investment, too.

While undoubtedly a place to live and for children to attend school, it is also a hive of industry, supporting many businesses, not least Mail Publications Ltd, publishers of the Down Mail. There are many types of business – pubs, offices restaurants, garages, hairdressers, home security and grocery shops which means it remains a self-sufficient community with no need to stray much further than its boundaries…which came in handy during lockdown!
