Pub to be demolished to widen road junction
PERMISSION to pull down one of Maidstone's most famous pubs has been granted. The Wheatsheaf, which sits at the junction of the A229 Loose Road and A274 Sutton Road, is to be demolished.
Kent County Council’s Kent
Highways department plans to re- move the building to make room for a larger junction aimed to im- prove traffic flow and reduce air pollution.
But KCC has no timeframe for when this work is likely to start. The Wheatsheaf has been a local landmark in the town since 1830. Cllr Ashleigh Kimmance told Maidstone Borough Council’s planning committee: “I’m strug- gling a bit with this application. There has been a pub on this site since 1830 and, all of a sudden, were going to knock down an- other pub.
“Loose Road itself has lost so
many pubs and, being an ale drinker, I can name all the pubs and I’m really struggling. The only thing that has ever changed about it is the colour.”
Cllr Tony Harwood said:
“We’ve got to be ambitious. We know the highways authority will get away with the most brutal, cheapest way of getting whatever this extra stacking space is. That is
all it is, because its not sorting anything else out. “What we should be demand- ing is some guarantees on what is going to replace this. We need to ensure that we have got a decent landscaping scheme.” Cllr John Perry said: “I drive past this pub very regularly and it is historic. It’s part of the infras- tructure. It’s difficult to go along with something as serious as this, like destroying a historic building when you don’t see the benefits on the other side. “I don’t like having to say yes to destroying a historical building that a lot of people enjoy. “There’s a lot of unanswered questions here. It’s rather insult- ing to this planning committee for KCC to come along and say they want this destroyed without giv- ing reasons for doing it.” The application was granted with conditions.
