News Cafe told to

clean up act A CAFE at Cobtree Manor Park in Aylesford has been warned to im- prove an aspect of the way it runs its business.

Although Food Standards

Agency (FSA) inspectors rated the Cobtree Café very good in its handling and management of food safety, the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building reduced the overall rat- ing to 2 out of 5, meaning im- provement is necessary. A spokesman for Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) spokesman, which runs the park, said: “In February 2021, there was a food standards visit at Cobtree Café that identified some build- ing improvements that were needed at that time. “Since then, all these improve-

ments have been completed and they were formally approved in a second visit in May 2021. “MBC looks forward to the Cobtree Café being rescored... and hopes its five-star score is re- instated.”

The FSA rates outlets based on how they handle the food, how it is stored, how it is prepared and the cleanliness of the facility.

Body on rails

SNODLAND railway station was forced to shut over the weekend after a person was found dead on the tracks. Police and paramedics were called to the scene at around 5am on June 12.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Paramedics also attended. However, sadly, a per- son was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to iden-

tify the deceased and inform their next of kin. This incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Keane shave FOOTBALLER Roy Keane had

his famous beard shaved off in a local barber shop.

The Manchester United legend visited The Hairy Bear in Ashford Road, Bearsted, for a shave on June 16.

The Republic of Ireland star,

who was filming for the European Championship at the Maidstone Studios, had his whiskers trimmed on the hottest of the day of the year. He left a "nice tip" ac- cording to co-owner, Dondas Michaelas.

22 Mayor’s civic debut

IN her first official engagement as Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Faye Gooch led a flag-raising ceremony in honour of Armed Forces Day.

Flags up and down the coun-

try were raised on Saturday, June 26, as a show of respect for the work of the Armed Forces. The mayor was joined in Brenchley Gardens by Trevor Sturgess, Deputy Lieutenant, representing the Lord-Lieu- tenant of Kent; Major Andy Britton Royal Engineers; and members of the Queen’s Gurkha Engineers based at In-

victa Park Barracks, with prayers led by Rev Andrew Royal. Cllr Gooch said: “From veter- ans, reservists, cadets and all Armed Forces personnel either currently serving or retired, they are a credit to our country. “Some are busy working around the world to help de- fend the UK and its interests, promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and fighting terrorism, all providing essen- tial services which we can sometimes take for granted.”

Talk to your father, sex offender is told

A CHILD sex offender avoided a year behind bars after illegally downloading 93 indecent images of children.

Jake Maytum (21), of Brishing Lane, Maidstone, accessed the photographs online, along with videos.

Prosecutor Ian Foinette said po- lice found various images on a tower computer system during a surprise visit to his home in November 2019.

Mr Foinette said: “He (Maytum)

began looking at images on what he called ‘the dark web’ and says initially he was disgusted by what he saw. He did not know why he kept going back to them. He said he wanted to see if the sites had taken down the images.”

Defending Tom Stern said May- tum, who is on the autistic spec- trum, had an “isolated personality” due to years of bully- ing at school. Mr Stern said: “He struggled all through school with his communi- cation and presentation. He practi- cally threw away his school years because of how badly bullied he was.”

Judge Charles Gratwicke said: “If there wasn’t a demand for material like this, young children wouldn’t be abused the way they are. “I note you have some personal difficulties, but they cannot excuse

this. I am also aware that you have had this hanging over your head since November 2019. So, it is in your hands now. “Leave this court. Don’t come back. If you have any worries you should talk to your father, that is what he is there for. Off you go.” Maytum pleaded guilty to two

counts of making an indecent pho- tograph of a child and possessing prohibited images of children. He was sentenced to a three-year community order, 35 rehabilitation meetings, and 100 hours of com- munity service to be completed within 15 months.

Sponsors keep club runners on track

A NATIONAL housebuilder is spon- soring a local athletics club for the third year running, helping to fund qualifications for the club’s volun- teer coaches. The company has been the spon-

sor for Medway and Maidstone Ath- letics Club, providing kit and equipment, including new vests for training and competitions. With the club’s income from membership and events reduced due to the pandemic, money raised from the sale of vests has been a vital source of funds. The club has over 300 members of mixed ages and abilities.
