News A vision for

regeneration HEADCORN village campaigner Martin Round has taken over as chairman of Maidstone Borough Council’s economic, regeneration and leisure (ERL) committee. Cllr Round's vice-chairman will

be the Coxheath and Hunton mem- ber Cllr Simon Webb. At June's ERL meeting, new MBC leader David Burton indicated a more "commercially-driven and customer-focused" approach by the committee.

Cllr Round said: "But with the only certain thing being uncer- tainty we still have to have options to open up the Maidstone borough, stimulate activities and events and get people out to support the econ- omy and jobs. It will be both im- mediate plans and longer term."

Bee festival

THE Festival of Bees will take place on July 24 and 25 at Kent County Showground. There will be talks from beekeep- ers as well as workshops and games for all the family. Tickets cost £7. Under 16s go free.

MPs demand action on poor bin service

TWO MPs have raised serious concerns about the standard of bin collection services since a new contractor was hired by Ton- bridge and Malling Borough Council (TMBC). Tom Tugendhat (Tonbridge and Malling) and Tracey Crouch (Chatham and Aylesford) have writ- ten to TMBC leader Nicholas Hes- lop calling for urgent action after complaints about missed rounds and rubbish left on pavements. The problem has been com- pounded by a rise in fly-tipping of over 75% during the pandemic. Urbaser took over the council contract in 2019 and immediately attracted attention for all the wrong reasons.

The MPs claim Urbaser has been

“sluggish” to respond to the issues. Their letter said: “We have seen

a rise in litter, fly-tipping and un- collected waste. This has left many

people frustrated and angry. “It is clear that since Urbaser started delivering waste services across Tonbridge and Malling their performance has been significantly short of what we expect. “We would appreciate it if you could articulate in the strongest possible terms our deep disap- pointment…and identify the ac- tion that will be taken to resolve the problem.”

TMBC Cllr Matt Boughton said:

“The service is way below expecta- tions. It’s shambolic. I don’t think the Urbaser contract is tenable and they’re going to have to look at al- ternatives.” The eight-year contract is shared with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council.
