Government & Housing Legalities The Greater Cincinnati Northern

Kentucky region is a hodgepodge of local governments spread out over several coun- ties. There are dozens of city and village councils, boards of county commissioners and township trustees, fiscal courts, zon- ing boards, housing authorities and more. Keeping up with the actions of local

governments is vital to the multi-family industry. Being caught off guard by an unexpected ordinance or government ac-

tion could pose major regulatory or financial issues. The Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Apartment Association (GCNKAA) has long done its best keeping current on local government actions and letting members know how those actions could impact their properties as well as their pocketbooks. Now, the Association has a new tool to help in that very im-

portant effort. The Association is utilizing Curate, a user-friendly software that eliminates some of the legwork following meeting minutes and agendas from local governments. Using key tracking words provided by the Association, Curate’s software scans meet- ing minutes and agenda from city, counties, villages, townships and zoning boards and then delivers a weekly digest with the info that might concern our members.

This heading deals with housing & legal issues within the Governmental structure.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: TRACKING SOFTWARE PROVIDES NEW TOOL FOR GCNKAA TO KEEP UP WITH LOCAL GOVERNMENTS By Pat Crowley, Vice President of Governmental Affairs

Among the key words and phrases being tracked are “his-

toric preservation”, “development requirements”, “comprehensive plan”, “property ownership”, “impact fees”, “taxes”, “short term rentals”, “vacant or blighted property”, “zoning & land use code” and many more. In just the few weeks that the Association has been using

Curate, we have been alerted to a city drafting new storm water policy, the enactment of a new fair housing policy, the creation of a new housing authority and regulations over dog ownership in a local village.

Curate will be effective in tracking local government action,

but it won’t get everything. Curate is limited by the amount of in- formation in agendas and meeting minutes that local governments post online. Some communities post a lot of information while others do very little. But even those that post scant information can provide us leads that we can follow-up on and assess their impact. And the Association’s staff and Legislative Committee mem- bers will continue to track local government actions through con- tacts, relationships and other methods so that important policy de- cisions don’t slip through the cracks. But there is no doubt that Curate will be a valuable resource in staying current on local government actions.
