Medicine Hat, disc golf is slowly becoming a household sport. Played with the same base concept in mind — direct your disc from the tee to the basket in as few throws as possible — disc golf offers a fun and easy-to-learn option for outdoor activity in the sunny city of Medicine Hat. What’s more, the sport seems to be tailor-made for pandemic play, allowing participants to get the full experience while practising social distancing and following other outdoor gather guidelines.

Nine-hole tracks at Central Park in the SE Hill area and Leinweber Park in Crestwood — each offering their own challenges — have helped spur on the new trend. The spike in popularity has even led to the creation of local leagues and tournaments. Medicine Hat Disc Golf Leagues start in mid-June and run every Tuesday at Central Park and Thursdays at Lienweber Park. The barrier to entry is almost non-existent, as newcomers to the sport can simply bring a frisbee to a nearby course and give it their best shot. However, those looking to get into the game on a competitive level may want to look into discs designed specifically for the sport, which allow for various distances like drivers, wedges and putters.
