If you’ve never visited Fort MacLeod you’re in for a pleasant surprise.
The Fort is the major attraction of course, originally built in 1874 it is now the Museum of the NW Mounted Police. There are 8 buildings housing over 9,000 artifacts on site. Located on the west-bound one-way you can’t
miss it. After you’ve taken in the history of
the Fort try taking a stroll down his- toric Main Street, the Empress Theatre opened there in 1912 and was touted as a “first class opera house” in its day. Over the years it has hosted many legendary
artists. Check out their website at www.
empresstheatre.ab.ca for any upcoming events. While walking down Main Street you may recognize some of the build- ings, this area was used to film many movies including Brokeback Mountain and the latest Ghostbusters movie. A quick 15 minute drive from Fort
MacLeod is the Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, it’s a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site that preserves and inter- prets over 6,000 years of Plains Buffalo Culture. Don’t forget to include 9 holes at the
Fort MacLeod golf course, built in 1890 it was the first course between Winni-
peg and the West Coast and follow it up with a visit to the Stronghold Brewing Company for a refreshment after your great day out.
